I’m finally back from my family vacation to Colorado and have somewhat recovered from all our activity. While making the 19 and 1/2 hour drive home I had quite a bit of time to think about this experiment and the posts I’ve written over the past week. I tried to look at the success forumula I’ve laid out and identify any elements that might prohibit someone from following it, and acheiving the success they want.

The forumula is as follows …

Goals + Positive Attitude + a Plan + Belief + Action + Accountability = SUCCESS

The following was my thought process as I worked through the formula on my drive home …

Goal Setting

Research has proven that only 3% of the population takes the time and effort necessary to write down their goals. This same 3% earns more than the remaining 97% combined.

Although this should be reason enough for you to have goals and write them down, I understand there are quite a few things that are possibly holding you back. I am not saying it’s “ok” to make excuses, I am simply saying there are reasons.

Let’s face it there are far more people in the world that will discourage you from thinking big, then there are that will encourage you to “reach for the stars.”

Since this is the case, we are basically conditioned to think small. We may intitially have a high goal, but by the time we share it with a couple people, we end up chipping away at it and whittling it down to something very small. Knowing this, I understand that, although dreaming big and setting goals should be easy, it really isn’t, due to the fact we’ve got so many people trying to drag us down.

Positive Attitude

Looking at things in a positive light is another thing that would be easy if it wern’t for the high amount of negativity we are faced with each day. Those same people who are telling you, “You can’t do that,” are the same people trying to have you catch their “negativity disease.”

There are far more people who seem to enjoy drama and whining about all the bad things that “happen to them.” These people will naturally have negative events repeatedly happen to them over and over because that’s what they focus on all the time.

I believe that each of us should mentally and physically divorce ourselves from negative people. It doesn’t matter if that negative person is your parents, siblings, or even your spouse. I know this may sound harsh, but unless you want to experience a lifetime of negativity, you need to surround yourself with positivity. I know this is a difficult thing to do, but you owe it to yourself.

Heck, if a friend of yours was in an abusive relationship you’d beg them to get out of it and think they were nuts if they didn’t. Surrounding yourself with negative people is EXACTLY the same thing as staying in an abusive relationship. DON’T DO IT!!

Have a Plan

Creating a plan is probably the easiest part of the equation so this is the part we’ll focus on the most. When you’ve set your goal, no matter how large or small, it should be quite easy to sit down with a piece of paper and outline all of the activities you’d need to accomplish in order to achieve that goal.

When you are writing your plan you should include every activity you can think of and be as specific as you can.

Believe You Can

If you happen to have kids, what do you tell them when they say, “I can’t do that!” I don’t know about you, but when I hear that I don’t like it!

My typical response is, “You can do anything you set your mind to.” I’m sure I’ve made this statement a million times without thinking about it because I was brought up in a positive environment where my parents supported me and encouraged me.

I understand that the majority don’t have this same type of environment, and I’ve already pointed out how we are basically surrounded by negativity. These circumstances make it very diffiult to set big goals, and in most cases believe we can accomplish even small goals.

The challenge with this is inline with the old phrase, “whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, YOU ARE RIGHT!”

If you want to succeed you MUST BELIEVE YOU CAN!

Take Action

Besides creating a plan taking action should be the easiest step of the formula. The challenge is, due to all the obstacles I’ve discussed thus far, we are conditioned to question our ability so much that we have a hard time finding the motivation to take action. After all, why do the work if there will never be any reward?

You need to spend enough time on your plan that you know if you take action, you will receive the results you are looking for. Following that you need to stop making excuses and start making progress. If you don’t you’ll be sentenced to a life of mediocrity, and in my opinion, that’s a huge waste of your talents.

Be Accountable

Most people are afraid to tell anyone what they are looking to accomplish because they are afraid either:

1. The person they tell will laugh at them and tell them they can’t.

2. They don’t believe they’ll follow through with their statement.

The bottom line is they are afraid of failing and being mocked for doing so. It is one thing to keep your plans private and be accountable to yourself. It is a completely different story to surround yourself with positive people who will encourage you once you’ve announced your goals and plans. The only trick is to have the ability to find those positive people, and as we’ve pointed out, that can prove itself to be quite a challenge with all the negativity in the world.

So how do you overcome all these obstacles?

The best way to overcome these obstacles is focus on the easiest parts of the formula and leverage those elements to accomplish the rest.

If you are currently earning $30,000 per year and set a goal to increase your income to $100,000, that can be quite daunting. Plus if you knew what it took to earn $100,000, you’d already be doing it.

But …

If you set a goal to spend one hour each day educating yourself within your industry, you would increase your worth in a BIG way, and when you bring more value, it is impossible to not be rewarded. I understand your current boss may not ever pay you that much, but if you increase your value … the word will spread. Opportunities will open up for you. BELIEVE IT!

Speaking of believing it …

Although it might be very difficult to believe your income will increase from $30,000 to $100,000 … it is totally believable that you can spend one hour educating yourself within your industry isn’t it? Of course it is!

If you knew that your goal was to have the large pay increase, but you focused on the action goals you set, you will begin to gain confidence and belief since you’ll be accomplishing goals every single day. This will have an incredible impact on your positive attitude, your belief, and pretty soon you won’t be able to take enough action. It is infectious!

The last piece is finding the positive people to hold you accountable. That’s where my little experiment comes into play.

I would like to see as many people set goals and accomplish them as possible over the next 30 days. This will be powerful since it takes a person 28 days to begin a new habit. If we work together for the next 30 days, everyone that participates will have created some very positive, powerful new habits.

We can use technology to bring together a group of positive people for encouragement and accountability.

Here is how it will work …

If you don’t already have a Twitter account, go to the page and set one up. This will take you less than 3 minutes. Set a goal (doesn’t matter how big or small) and create a plan containing three daily activities, which if completed, will help you reach this goal. Post these three daily activity goals individually on Twitter and include “#accountable” after the post. When you’ve accomplished these daily action goals, post it on Twitter and include “#accountable” after it.

Everyone that is participating in this experiment will have the ability to do a search on #accountable within Twitter, and monitor each participants progress. Knowing that other positive people will be monitoring your results should instill a sense of importance to your action goals. Plus you’ll now have a new core group of positive “cheerleaders” on your side encouraging you to succeed. As a small business owner, you’re certainly feeling the pain of the current economic climate. Whether you call our current situation a recession, a depression, or something else altogether, it’s clear that marketing our businesses to those customers who are still spending money is going to be a key to our business survival. And whether we like it or not, Internet marketing is going to have to be at the heart of any effective new marketing effort.

These days, the trend is strongly in favor of customers turning to the Internet to find the products that they’re looking for, and if they don’t find us (more specifically our websites), they’re going to take their business to someone they do find online. Social Networking

Do your kids (or perhaps you) spend time using online services like Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn? These are all examples of social networking site or services. At the most basic level, you could use social networking by establishing a profile for your business at various locations, in hopes that people who are interested in the kinds of products or services you provide will find it and get in contact with you. As with article marketing, there are many more sophisticated ways to market using social networking, but this is a start.

Blogging

A blog is a form of online journal. While some people use them like personal journals that strangers can read, you can also create a blog where you post useful and informative information that is in some way related to your business. The idea behind this approach is that visitors to the blog will find your useful information, and will feel compelled to return to the blog again and again for new posts. Once you have a group of regular customers, it’s easier to market to these visitors. After all, they have already shown themselves to be interested in what you have to offer, making it relatively easy to convert them into paying customers.

That’s the end of this introduction to three of the more popular and effective ways you can market your business on the Internet. There’s much more you can learn about each of them, plus many other techniques that can help you turn the Internet into your small business marketing ally. Still, to put these techniques into effect quickly and efficiently, you’re going to want some help.

I’ve signed up with Twitter few days ago, and I have been using it many times a day. I have also installed TwitterFox, a FireFox addon for Twitter.

I started using it actively and gradually developed an avid interest. I think Twitter is a manageable process that can be adopted for all types of lifestyles, busy or inactive. You’ll just need to integrate it within your normal workflow. It’s addictive but once you understand how to use it, it can be a very effective tool indeed!

Having read a great deal of other articles on Twitter, I decided a do a quick summary of all the ideas you can use Twitter for – your professional and/or personal life. Some of these methods go beyond the use of Twitter as a lifestreaming device:

Use it as a Personal Branding Tool. Twitter is a social media platform which you can use to build your personal brand. It establishes you as a social personality that is connected and approachable. As Twitter adoption increases, new users will be drawn towards well established Twitter personas. Get Feedbacks! If you need another opinion on how a website looks or the right course of action to take, just drop out a message asking for advice and you’ll receive replies from other users. This collective intelligence can be used as feeds  for articles or projects. Attract traffic. Twitter can be used to get traffic to your websites or the sites of your friends. If you ask your friends to tweet about it, the message will spread faster. There is a viral nature to all types of news, even on a site like Twitter. Tweeting Newspaper. Twitter users often link to useful sites or articles and can be a source of scoops and alternative news. You can also subscribe to Twitter feeds for specific websites or conferences, which allows you to receive and view content quickly. This is very useful for active social news participants. Making New Friends. Like any other social networking site, Twitter has a built-in function for you to befriend and track the messages of other users. This is an easy way for you connect with people outside of your usual circle. Take some efforts to add active users you find interesting. A Twitter acquaintance can be developed into a long lasting friendship! Network for benefits. Twitter can be used as a socializing platform for you to interact with other like-minded people, especially those in the same industry. It can be used to establish consistent and deeper relationships for future benefits such as testimonials or peer recommendations. Business Management. Twitter can be used as a company intranet that connects employees to one another. Employees can interact with each other when working on group projects. Particularly useful when certain workers go out often in the field. Updates could be set to private for security reasons. A Mean To Notify Your Customers. Set up a Twitter feed for the specific purpose of notifying customers when new products come in. Customers can subscribe via mobile or RSS for instant notification. Twitter can also be used to provide mini-updates for one-on-one clients. Event Updates. Businesses can use Twitter as a means to inform event participants and latest event happenings/changes. This is a hassle-free way of disseminating information, especially when you don’t have the means to set up a direct mobile link between you and the audience. As such its applicable to almost all event organizers. Find Prospects. Twitter can be used as a means to find potential customers or clients online. Do a search for keywords related to your product on Twitter Search and then follow users. Tweet about topics parallel to your product and close prospects away from public channels by using direct messages or offline communications. Discretion and skill is needed in this area. Provide Live Coverage. Twitter’s message size limit prevents detailed coverage of events but it can allow you to provide real-time commentary which may help to spark further discussion or interest on the event as other Twitter users spread the message. Very useful for citizen journalism. Acquire Votes. Send a link to your stories you’ve submitted in other social news sites like Digg. Sometimes your followers will vote up the stories because they agree with it. This allows you to acquire more support for your efforts on other social media websites.

He is by no means a Social Media Purist, but still he teaches what he considers the “right way” to interact on Twitter & other Social Media platforms (hint: it ain’t by spamming people your offers). Harris has a number of years of success in the internet marketing realm and I feel very honored to have him as a guest author today.

With that … here’s Harris’ blog post entitled “The Easy Way to Get Targeted Twitter Followers”:

Maybe you’re like I was just a few months ago, thinking:

“Twitter is short for Time Waster”

or

“Twitter is just not a business tool”

or

“I joined Twitter and I just don’t get it”

I’ve introduced a number of people to Twitter and I hear things like this all the time. Especially the last statement. Typically what happens is someone will join up, invite some of their friends, and then lo and behold, sit there and wait around for something to happen. Although the founders of Twitter claim that it’s just a micro-blogging tool, it really has become a rapidly growing , if somewhat rudimentary, social network.

Like I said in my last blog post on the subject, there’s a right way and a wrong way to go about attacking Twitter for your own purposes. If you’re jumping into Twitter and looking at it primarily as a way to make money, you’ll fail miserably and you’ll fail quickly.

Allow me to remind you of my rules for “right” Twittering:

1. First get a good network of followers going.
2. Build relationships with your network.
3. Get your followers to click on your links & tell others about you by retweeting your messages
4. Then, and only then, consider how you might monetize the network.

I actually recommend that you don’t even bother thinking about making any money with your twitter contacts until you’ve got at least 5000 followers. I know what you’re thinking. HANG ON THERE! 5000 followers? How am I gonna get 5000 followers? The answer is quite simple, my friends.

Follow other people first.

It’s based on the law of reciprocity: you follow someone, they follow you back. It’s really the ‘way of the world’ on Twitter and it works far better than any one of the other systems out there. Some of those other ideas for getting followers can work, but truthfully, at the core “follow others and they’ll follow back” is the best system out there. You’re in control of who you’re following & thus what ‘target audience’ you’re hitting as well.

Depending on what niche or business you happen to be in you can expect somewhere between 20 to 50% of those people to follow you back.

Wait a second, Harris… What’s this “business or niche” part?

Let me explain:

One of the coolest aspects of Twitter is that you can really focus down and TARGET people who are interested in what you have to say. I first recommend that you create a good profile and decent background for your account that really shows off your personality and main interests. Make it, what I call, “Follow Friendly” so that when you follow people, they see your Twitter account, the right people will want to follow you back. (The ‘right people’ being people that are also interested in what your key interests or business is all about.)

I’ll finish up this post by letting you in on some some great services that will help you find people who are in your niche and share your personal interests. Be sure to check out MrTweet.com, WeFollow.com, and Twibes.com. All you have to do at these sites is type in your keyword and find people in your industry or niche. What you’ll want to do here is find people on Twitter in your area of interest with (generally) between 2,000 and 100,000 followers. And then what you want to do is … not only follow them, but FOLLOW THEIR FOLLOWERS, TOO. Twitter allows you to follow up to 1000 per day – I recommend more like 300-500 per day.

And don’t think you have to do it all yourself – you can hire a virtual assistant to do it for you for a few hundred bucks a month or get a software tool that does this as well. And believe me, there’s plenty of tools out there! I’ve personally tested out a large number of these “follow tools” and the one I recommend is called “Twit FriendAdder”. It’s only $50 and does everything (and more) than software I’ve seen at 4 times the price.

There are a many ways to get connected online.  The best strategy is to try out a couple different social networking tools, explore them, understand them, and make time to make them work.  Don’t try to use all the sites out there because no one has time to keep up with all of them.  Explore, plan, proceed.

Promoting a site on a social network has become a normal component of any online marketer’s bag of tricks. However, it’s an idea that not many seem to have played around with for the sulumits retsambew SEO contest. Using social networks to gain a foothold in the competition seems to be an effective strategy, as a few users have just found out.

Simply Meteoric

A good number of the domains and pages in the Top 10 of the search results for the keyword phrase are there for one big reason or another. Several of them were the first to post the rules or some little factoid about the contest, and so raked in numerous inbound links. Others were blog post updates on the competition, which could also attract a lot of people linking back. The main point is that all of these pages had one thing in common – honest-to-goodness content.

More than a few people were surprised when a social networking page showed up in the top 10 results. Even more shocking was that the Twitter profile climbed to its current position in a matter of days – less than 5, in fact. Compare that to the weeks that it took some of the top rankers to get to where they are now.

What about Content?

The Twitter profile in question simply had a short comment from the user expressing that he was hoping for his page to become a serious contender in the contest. It received some replies, but the number wasn’t all too big. Aside from the poster’s initial statement, there wasn’t much other content on the page. So what could have factored into its rise on the search result pages?

It could be all the internal links to the profile. After all, each link that points to your page counts for something under Google’s current PageRank paradigm. When you factor in that all his posts on Twitter as well as those replying to his posts would link to that page (check a typical Twitter post to see how), that amounts to a pretty significant number of links.

When you think about it, that Twitter page is simply playing the strengths of any social network. Most of the content you post on a social network would get entered into a web of friends, acquaintances and various relationships. Every single reply, image and blog post will always link to somewhere – and inevitably to you.

Is It a Good Strategy?

Most probably, yes. When you think about how social networks operate, it definitely makes sense particularly if you’re the type of marketer who relies on backlinks. There’s not much content required either, so there’s more than enough time to campaign on a social network before the August 2009 deadline for sulumits retsambew.

The answer is a lot hazier when it’s a social network going head to head against a page with good old content. While backlinks are one of the most effective tools that an online marketer could use, it often gets trumped by content that’s simply useful.

1. Register for Twitter.com – Create both a band account and each band member needs to create an account. Use the band member accounts to be interactive with fans while the band account would be used for band “Tweets” such as new songs, new shows, new blogs, etc.

2. Twitter Widgets – Make sure you add Twitter widgets to all of your sites so people can easily find and add your Twitter account. You can select various widgets to use for your MySpace, Facebook, Blogger and other accounts.

By having Twitter contests, you increase the amount of people that will “follow” you on Twitter which increases your fan exposure.

8. Tweet-Ups – This is just a fancy name to meet up a group of people by giving them a location via Twitter. If you’re on the road or in your hometown, surprise fans by offering a “Tweet-up” so fans can meet you. You can also use it for surprise shows, acoustic shows or other promotional needs.

9. Twitter Onstage – A creative way to get fans to add you on Twitter is to tell everyone, between a song, to add your band and/or band member accounts on their Twitter. Fans can do all of this from their phone. They simply have to text “follow (username)” and hit send. Your fans are now following you. The bigger your bands followers the more influence you have over them to get out information fast.

Over the past several years, we’ve seen dot.com’s come and go. We’ve watched dot.com moguls go from rags to riches, and back to rags again. So what makes Twitter.com so different? Or, could it be that it’s future is not as bright as most think it is? Of course, if I was any good at fortune telling, I’d be able to answer that. I’m not, and I won’t try. I do know this for a fact though – Twitter.com has provided the network marketer with a seemingly endless source of customers. Hence, a marketer’s dream come true.

What a marketer does with his/her twitter.com account is altogether different from the normal method of internet marketing. Instead of flooding email boxes with ads, the typical twitter client can expect to see a myriad of ads when they log on to their account. What seperates the good marketer from the spamming marketer? A good marketer will know what to advertise. Know the users that are seeing the ads. Will distribute the ads evenly. A spammer? Well, the ads are not targeted, they are more or less grabbed from thin air and shoved in front as many people as they can get the ad in front of. All the while, having no clue as to what it is they are actually selling, nor to whom they are trying to sell it too. Shotgunning is what I call it. If you throw enough pellets out of the barrel of a gun, one of them is bound to hit something. The spammer’s mentality.

I think only Walmart could make that claim, on a global basis of course.

Buying PPC (pay per click) like Google’s Adwords is probably one of the most known paid traffic strategy, but there are many others. You can also buy text links, banner advertising, display ads on other people’s sites and blogs. You can also buy classified ads in other people’s ezines and even solo-mailings to other people’s lists of subscribers. A lot of savvy marketers also use strategic alliances or JVs (Joined Ventured) to quickly drive massive traffic to their websites. While it’s a very effective strategy, it’s not free. Your JV partners will typically want to get a hefty percentage of the sales they generate with their promotions of your site. But – it will be quick! Component 2 – Lead Generation One of the biggest mistakes most people make is they try to get a sale too soon! Instead, a much better approach is to generate a lead first, then convert that lead into a paid first-time customer. Let’s take this one step at a time – converting visitors into subscribers of some sort – a.k.a. “leads”! This is a critical step because it will allow you to continue communicating with people interested in your products or services. You’ve probably heard that in any business your money and success are in your list, in your database of subscribers and your relationship with them. It’s very important to learn how to get people to come to your site and then entice them to want to give you their name and email. It used to be enough to just say something like “subscribe to my newsletter,” or “get updates about my business,” somewhere on your website to get people to opt-in to your database. But those days are long gone. Today you must be really good at presenting great value fast and making irresistible first offers to your visitors to persuade them to give up their contact information. Strategies that still work great include giving your web visitors access to special reports, audio downloads, or informative video and audio presentations. Obviously the better the quality of your “carrot” and the better your presentation of it, the better your conversion will be. (Conversion is the comparison of the number of people that take you up on your offer and subscribe to your list to the total number of people that visit your website.) Component 3 – Lead Conversion Now that you have a list of subscribers – a.k.a. database of leads – how do you convert them into paid customers, someone who would actually gives you a few dollars? Generating that first sale is your lead conversion. Just like lead generation, lead conversion strategies will vary from business to business, depending on what you are selling and who your customers are. But the key to your success is to systemize and automate this process as much as possible. Let me give you an example. Think of a service business, for example some like a professional life coach. Most likely they have no systems in place. Every new client is gained a different way. A conversation with each new prospect is different from others. Every lead is generated a different way. Every lead is converted differently. It’s no wonder their businesses are overwhelming them and generating very little money. There are no systems in place. Now let’s look at a different professional and scenario; someone like an orthodontist. Everything is systemized. From the same lead generation mechanisms to how patients get introduced to the doctor’s office to the first experience when they come in, to how they get to meet the doctor, how their initial evaluation is presented and delivered, how the price is quoted and how the treatment is initiated. Everything is identical for each new patient! Everything is done the same way over and over and over. Everything is a system. And that’s what you are looking for in successful information marketing business model – systemized and automated lead conversion strategies. Component 4 – Profit Multipliers Once you generate the first sale, you will sell more products or services to your new customer. It’s important for two reasons. First, you probably have more products and services that can help that client much more beyond what they initially received from you. And second, that’s the way to maximize the success and profitability of your business! Here are few examples of profit multipliers. First there is down-selling. Basically what it means is that if someone comes to your website and says, “I don’t think I’m willing to pay $97you’re your multi-media course – and I’m leaving your website,” you present them with another opportunity to purchase a similar product that sells for $47 or even less and say, “Maybe $97 is too much for your budget right now. Can I interest you in getting a similar highly quality course that costs only $20?” A different down-sale would be to offer a payment plan. You’d say something like this, “If $97 is too much right now, can I make it more affordable for you by letting you pay in three payments of $33?” Next, there is a cross-sale. If they pay $97 for your first program, maybe they like to add another program that will help them get more value out of their initial purchase, especially if it’s priced attractively. It’s an effective way to immediately increase the size of each initial transaction. Then there are continuity programs. For instance, if you are a coach you can have a system in place where after the initial first sale of some type of a home study course the customer receives an invitation to join a group coaching and support program for which they would then pay monthly. And these are just a few simple ideas of what you can do to multiply your sales and profits. Component 5 -Scalability Your ultimate goal is to systemize and automate your business so that its growth can be expended beyond your own efforts. Once you have all of the key components in place, focus on simplifying, systemizing, automating, delegating – in short, you want to optimize your business for maximum performance with minimum efforts. Then simply start driving more traffic through this “profit machine”, and, if you designed it well, it will work like a charm and continue making you more money. It’s like of like turn the faucet knob on full blast. So to have an effective business model first you need to generate traffic to your website, then you need a way to convert that traffic into leads, then convert leads into first-time customers, and then use profit multipliers to maximize your sales and profits.

By now most everyone knows and uses a social networking site i.e. Facebook, Twitter or Myspace. With BlackBerry, there are several different applications for your smartphone which will give your network the right specific connections, and stay in touch to be entertained.

Social networking Apps

Life260 – This is a free specialized neighborhood social networking app which keeps users up to date with their local community and family. Users of this app can receive emergency alerts, and send notices out to people in the area. It helps you to get to know your neighbors through block party invites, lost pets, etc.

Wertago – This free application is geared towards people who enjoy late nights, and club crawls. This social network application lets people coordinate social events for different clubs, restaurants, and theatres as well as rate hotspots, create personalized profiles for others in order to share stories, pics, ratings and details all in real time. This program uses Google Maps API to map out the different haunts.

ShoZu – This app makes sending your BlackBerry pictures to social networking sites fast and easy. Each time you take a picture or record video, you will be asked to which social networking sites you want to upload to. ShoZu for BlackBerry allows you to add titles and descriptions to your photos before sending them.

TuneWiki – This app is open source music based social network. It allows users to share what they are listening to with others, using Google Maps to find others around the world who share similar music interests. It plays audio and video for each song while lyrics scroll by on your screen, and makes a virtual library of your music to link up to the internet.

Music Apps

Pandora for BlackBerry – If you are not already aware of this free app, download it now. It is the best streaming music site since the web went mobile. Pandora matches your music tastes with new artists you might like, and sets up music lists, play lists and new artists for your particular tastes. Just start with the name of your favorite songs or artists and Pandora will create a ’station’ which plays all the music and more like it. You may never listen to your homemade play lists again.

Slacker Radio – Normally, you have two options when listening to music on the go, until now. With this app you can set up play lists, transfer music from memory cards or listen to Slacker, which is hooked up to your web account and gives an unlimited supply of new tunes. It has a few commercials, but where else could you get surprises from your favorite DJs. You can also cache channels to be listened to when you can’t find a signal.

SplashPlay – You can download this app and learn to play any instrument in a snap. It is a new way to learn, create and share music on your BlackBerry with a real instrument. Each tutorial is created by established musicians, and it’s free.

Guitar Hero World Tour Mobile – No must have app music list would be complete without your own personal mobile Guitar Hero on your BlackBerry. It costs $9.99, and is completely worth it if you are already a fan. Just imagine ripping up the skins or shredding the strings while you’re on a coffee break.

TWITTER – Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author’s profile page and delivered to the author’s subscribers who are known as followers. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow open access.

YOU-TUBE – YouTube is a video sharing website on which users can upload and share videos. Most of the content on YouTube has been uploaded by individuals, although media corporations including CBS, the BBC, UMG and other organizations offer some of their material via the site, as part of the YouTube partnership program. Alexa ranks You-Tube as the fourth most visited site on the web.

There are literally thousands of pages worth of great information and insight into each of these networks.  My recommendation is that you do some initial research and spend some time getting familiar with each network and what its intended purpose is.  There is loads of great free information available. Think about the people around you and what problems they have and find something that will be the solution for lots of people.

Doing a search on Google and finding how many other people are searching the same problem or interest is also a good way to discover market demand. When you find a product that you love to use and that solves a problem or interest for you, test it on some of your friends to see what their response is. Read all you can find on the internet about the product and what people are saying about it. If you love the product and your friends love the product and it seems to have positive press on the internet, then you probably have found the right product on which to build your best home business opportunity.

Secret #3: Your personal ethical and moral code should match the business

Does the business ring with you? Can you sleep at night with a clear conscience promoting your chosen business? Does it fit with your core values? Will you be proud to share this business with your friends? Can you be passionate about the product and the compensation plan? Does the business truly give value equal to the cost?

When you find a business that is in alignment with your core values, and you are true to your inner being, then you will be able to promote your business with honesty and people will be attracted to your business.

Making money online can be difficult. It can also be easy. How can it be both difficult and easy at the same time? The difference is: your attitude and the tools you are given to get started.

Now, we all know that there are several ways to make money online, and one of those very popular choices is through affiliate marketing. If you don’t know what affiliate marketing is, it’s basically like a joint venture between a vendor and an affiliate. The vendor is a company or individual that produces a product or service and sells that service. The affiliate is someone like you or me who signs up with that vendor, most likely because we like their product, and we are given full rights to sell that product through a unique hyperlink. When someone purchases through your link, you earn a percentage commission on that sale. So, if someone buys an eBook that cost $47 and you earn a 50% commission on that sale, you just earned $23.50 on that one sale.

Affiliate marketing is such a great option because you don’t even need your own website. It seems pretty easy, right? Well, that depends.

A lot of people are dabbling in affiliate marketing, so there’s a lot of competition out there. I can speak for myself. I have spent the past five months figuring out how to make money online.

I went to my local bookstore and bought a book on website design, a book on search engine optimization, a book on blogging, a book on web copy writing, and a book on social media. Not only that, but I have spent money on some guy’s bogus traffic-building product (cost me $77) and I even spent money on a product called Commission Blueprint, which teaches you how to make affiliate sales through advertising on Google.

So, what did all this stuff do for me? I would say that I know a lot about each separate component, after reading and using all these books and videos. Commission Blueprint really IS a great product, and I did make one sale. Unfortunately, I have to compare this product to gambling. This product basically teaches you how to advertise through pay-per-click campaigns (and nothing else) to make affiliate sales.

With pay-per-click campaigns, you would normally sign up with Google Adwords to create a text ad with your affiliate link. You have to pay Google money when someone clicks on your ad. You are gambling away your money in hopes of making enough profitable sales. I tried it, and after I saw that I had two clicks on my Google advertisement, I saw that I had gotten a sale.

My first sale!

I made about $20 and those two clicks cost me about 50 cents. A profit of $19.50 is not bad at all. Then guess what happened? I got over 200 more clicks and didn’t get one sale. How much did those 200 clicks cost me? About $65.

Do you see how I compare it to gambling? I went from profit gain to profit loss. You really have to invest a lot of money into pay-per-click campaigns and they’re not always going to be winners. In my humble opinion, it’s too volatile.

About a month ago, I came across a guy’s blog about online marketing. I saw that he was promoting a product that I had seen before. I ALWAYS thought that it looked like a complete scam.

Since I had been following this guy’s blog, his YouTube videos, his Facebook profile, and his Twitter updates, I knew this guy was sincerely trying to help people make money online. I couldn’t understand why he was promoting such a sketchy-looking product.

I came across one of his blog posts where he admitted to only promoting products that he knows work well because he uses them himself, which is why he indeed started his blog about online marketing.

Guess what I did? I went ahead and bought the product. I trusted this guy and I bought it. I was going to refund it right away if I discovered that my blogging friend was bluffing.

It’s been almost three weeks now, and I have already made a few hundred dollars (and growing). It’s unbelievable. After five months of studying the separate components of online marketing (blogging, SEO, traffic generation, website design, etc.), I realized that I educated myself a lot on these aspects, but I didn’t quite understand how everything fit together.

I feel like I didn’t succeed with Commission Blueprint because it ONLY focused on one aspect of online marketing, which were pay-per-click campaigns. The great thing about the new product I am using is that it’s made by a group (not one person, a GROUP) of self-made internet millionaires, who have delicately put together a system of all the intricate aspects of online marketing.

It all just fits together to make sense, which is why people make great money with it. What I found amazing is that it offers you the chance to start making “Quick Money” to get experience, and to see that it really does work. After that, you have the opportunity to start making a long-term plan for REAL income.

I’m completely blown away, because I never knew this existed. Yes, I know it sounds cliché, but trust me, it does work. Even the name of the product sounds lame, which is why I turned my back on it over the past five months that I’ve been studying online marketing. Thank goodness for that one loyal blogger that I trusted.

What does your Twitter profile say about you?  Twitter doesn’t give us much space to create a powerful profile, but we can still do it.  Would a potential customer look at your profile and say, “I want to follow that person”?

Here are some tips you can use to help beef up your Twitter profile.  Like it or not, Twitter is here to stay.  You want to use it to strengthen your online presence, to bring readers to your blog or web site, and to learn what is happening in the online world.

Post a photo.  On Twitter you can create a company site as well as an individual site.  If you develop a product profile for your company, you’ll post the company logo.  But, you’ll also want your own individual profile.  People like to see people, not logos.  Twitter is very personal.  You “follow” someone.  That means you follow someone, not something.  Make sure your photo says what you want it to say.  Be careful of a photo that shows you in a revealing dress.  Twitter is full of porno sites.  Don’t let people mistake you for a porno site because you like that picture of you in the skimpy dress. Describe who you are and the benefits of knowing you.  On Twitter you have very few words for describing yourself.  Imagine creating your 10-second elevator speech.  That’s what you are doing on Twitter.  You must reveal what it is about you that makes you interesting enough to follow. Keep your profile up-to-date.  If things change, make sure you update your profile.  For example, when I published my second book, I changed my 10-second to read: “Say It Just Right Master, communications coach, author and speaker.” Make sure you put your company web sites on your profile.  Twitter allows you to put your web site on your headline page.  If people like what they see, it’s the first place they will go. Brand yourself with your background.  Twitter gives you an opportunity to create your own background colors and logo.  If you take a look at people’s Twitter pages, you’ll see all kinds of interesting, colorful backgrounds.  It’s better to put your own logo up in the background, using the company colors than to use one of the default selections Twitter offers.  Even photos of you placed in an interesting way can attract people to your site.  Remember, Twitter is about branding. The most prominent things you’ll see on the Twitter profile are your Tweets.  If you are constantly “in your face” with Tweets that sell, sell, sell, that will turn people off.  Most people look for a variety of Tweets.  They look for @ symbols that suggest that you are interacting with people.  They look for RTs that suggest that you read other people’s Tweets.  They look for links that suggest that you share stuff.  And they look for questions, suggesting that you don’t know all the answers. Know your audience.  Tweets give you a great indication of what your audience is interested in.  You can learn not only what your target market is interested in but also what your competitors are up to.  In a blog, “Social Media and Twitter: 10 Principles for Getting Started,” the author encourages Tweeters to use this information to figure out what to share with people.  A large company, for example, like Dell, has several Twitter accounts, each Tweeting about different things.  By the way, where did I find this blog post?  On Twitter, of course.

Web-based malware: the new weapon

With one new web page infected every 4.5 seconds,1 the web is now the number one vector of attack for cybercriminals. Taking advantage of web infrastructure vulnerabilities, particularly the ever-increasing

capability for user-submitted content, hackers are able to covertly inject malicious code into

more and more legitimate sites. This web-based malware is then able to exploit social engineering

tactics or browser vulnerabilities to infect visitors, the intention being to surreptitiously steal

confidential information directly, install further malicious code or, worse, silently recruit the host

system into a botnet – a network of hijacked computers for distributing further malware,

spyware, or spam.

Thousands of systems are infected in this way every day and the activity is particularly lucrative

for the criminals – a single compromised computer can give access to thousands of confidential

records. This significant security risk can be extremely costly to businesses, with some

estimates for a data breach estimated at millions, and even billions, of dollars.

In addition to significant security and financialrisks, organizations are having to deal with the legal implications of security breaches. Organizations can be legally liable if their computers are used to view pornography or hate material or to incite illegal behavior. There are also ramifications if users violate third-party licenses through illegal MP3, film and software downloads.

At the same time uncontrolled web browsing can have serious productivity implications with unauthorized surfing potentially causing network slowdown, staff inefficiency and further security (and legal) risk if sensitive company or personal data is posted online.

Exploiting legitimate, trusted brands

Hackers don’t tend to discriminate between websites. Large, more established brands with high traffic volumes are very attractive to cybercriminals but smaller organizations are equally likely to fall victim. The only criterion is

that the website has vulnerabilities that the hacker can exploit. The techniques used continue to evolve rapidly and this paper now looks at what the hackers are up to today.

Infecting trusted sites with SQL injection attacks

One of the main threats comes from SQL injection attacks. Such attacks exploit security vulnerabilities

and insert malicious code (in this case script tags) into the database running a site. When user input,

for instance via a web form, is not correctly filtered or checked, the code peppers the database with

malicious instructions.

Websites that have been attacked in this way include:

BusinessWeek magazine – one of the 1000 busiest websites – which attempted to download malware from a Russian-based server.

An area of the Adobe website designed to offer support to video bloggers, which tried to

download spyware.

Sony’s US PlayStation website, putting visitors at risk from a scareware attack.

Recovery from a SQL injection attack can be difficult, and there are numerous cases of website

owners cleaning up their database only to be hit again a few hours later.

New gateways for cybercrime

The new freedoms opened up by the web, blurring the lines between work and social interaction and

offering easy ways to share information, have opened up new loopholes for cybercriminals to

exploit.

Social networking sites

A favorite target for today’s hackers are social networking websites. People who have learned to

be suspicious of email links are on the whole less savvy about links posted on Facebook and the

like. Hackers have found value in compromising Facebook accounts, stealing usernames and

passwords, and then using the profiles as a launching pad for mass-distributing malware

attacks and spam.

In August 2008, Facebook admitted that up to 1800 users had had their profiles defaced by an attack that secretly installed a Trojan while displaying an animated graphic of a court jester blowing a raspberry.7

One particularly active threat is Koobface, a family of worms, and its rapid evolution demonstrates

the wide range of social networks that are vulnerable. Initially targeting Facebook and MySpace, Koobface now targets a more diverse set of social networks, including MySpace, Bebo, hi5, GeoCities, Friendster and Tagged.

The malware works by directing your “friends” on your social networking site to click on a link to another site

purporting to contain a video clip. If they are tricked into downloading an executable to watch the video at the third-party website, a message is displayed: “Error installing Codec. Please Contact Support”. The malware then accesses Facebook/MySpace/etc to spread itself further.

The websites to which victims are directed use a script to check which of these social networking

sites has sent them there. The aim is to serve up malware specifically tailored to the networks of which you’re known to be a member (though in fact to date these links all result in the same executable).

Blogs, micro-blogs and hackers

Hackers are also targeting other social media such as blogs. In much the same way that they set up malicious pages on fake websites and then use social engineering techniques to lure visitors to them, they are using free blogging services to infected blogs. Unsuspecting victims then receive emails with links to the blog, from which

malicious software is downloaded.

At the same time, vulnerabilities in common legitimate blogging platforms – just like any other platform – can be, and are, exploited by criminals.

Of note is the micro-blogging site, Twitter, which has begun to be targeted. In January 2009, Twitter’s internal systems were hacked and the accounts of Britney Spears, Fox News and Barack Obama, among others, were broken into.11 Two months later hundreds of Twitter users were hit when messages were sent from compromised

accounts trying to drive traffic to a pornographic website.

The spread of the phishing net

Phishing attacks – whereby unsuspecting users are directed to to a bogus login page which requests

their username and password – continue to be a significant threat.

A common misconception is that phishing is just a banking problem. It remains, of course, a banking

problem but it is now also a problem for social networking sites, such as MySpace, Facebook, Bebo and a wide range of other networks and

enterprises.

A handful of examples from February and March 2009 alone demonstrate the scale of the problem.

Google A phishing campaign spread via the Google Talk chat system.13

iStockphoto a phishing attack was perpetrated across iStockphoto’s online forums and via the

site’s mail system.14

Gaming community The Valve Steam network was targeted by a phish offering add-ons for the

new zombie shooter Left 4 Dead.15

Paypal An unusual type of phishing attack spammed out malware within a RAR attachment.16

HMRC The passing of the deadline for submitting tax returns to HM Revenue & Customs in the UK prompted a phish.17

The risks posed by anonymizing proxies

Many organizations have responded to the growing web threat by using URL filtering to curtail

internet browsing. This has motivated many users to respond by using anonymizing proxies which disguise the true nature of a website in order to trick an organization’s web filter into allowing access.

Anonymizing proxies are big business in the underground economy, driven by advertising revenues and subscription fees. Hundreds of new anonymizing proxies are created daily and distributed via blogs, forums, and dedicated

websites. There is also a growing number of unknown private anonymizing proxies setup and maintained by individuals or small groups for their own use. This makes it extremely easy for users to access any site they want through an anonymizing proxy, but a difficult, tedious, and time-consumingtask for administrators to track and block them.

Anonymizing proxies hold significant risks for organizations:

Security: If users are browsing via anonymizing proxies, then in addition to bypassing URL filtering, they might also be circumnavigating content scanning at the perimeter, which dramatically increases the chance of infection.

There are even anonymizing proxies that are themselves, either accidentally or deliberately,

infected with malware.

Liability: Unrestricted access to inappropriate

serious legal ramifications for an organization,

as could the sharing of confidential information

over the internet.

Productivity: The ability for users to bypass

their organization’s web filter means they

could spend all day on, for example, social

networking sites rather than working, and

consume valuable network bandwidth.

The three pillars of modern web protection

Internet access creates a dilemma for network administrators – on the one hand, the risks presented by allowing unfettered access to the web are enormous, yet the internet is undeniably becoming a mission-critical business tool. Social networking sites, blogs, forums and media portals have all become important instruments for employee recruitment, viral marketing, public relations, customer interaction, and research – they cannot be blocked without seriously impacting business productivity and effectiveness.

A new approach to web security and control is required that fully supports the needs of business,

equipping users with the tools they need to be more effective while eliminating the associated risks of potential infection from trusted legitimate sites. In addition to good preventive practices, such as rigorous patching and educating users about the risks of browsing, it is vital that organizations implement a comprehensive web

security solution, comprising three key pillars of protection:

Reputation-based filtering

Real-time predictive malware filtering

Content-based filtering.

Reputation-based filtering

Reputation-based filters are the first critical component in the fight against web-based threats.

They prevent access to a catalog of sites that are known to have hosted malware or other

unwanted content, by filtering URLs based on their reputation as “good” or “bad”, and are

an established and proven tool for successfully protecting against already known and located

web-based threats. As well as providing this basic form of preventive protection, they help optimize

network performance and staff productivity by blocking access to illegal, inappropriate or nonbusiness-

critical web content.

Although traditional URL filters often connect to vast, regularly updated databases of sites known to host malware or suspicious content, they have several significant shortcomings. In particular, they offer no protection against malware hosted on legitimate, previously safe, sites that have become hijacked. Neither do they protect against malware

on newly created websites. Cybercriminals are well aware of, and readily exploit, the fact that traffic from these sites is not blocked and that malware, whether new or old, will be allowed into an organization.

Another significant shortcoming of traditional URL filters is that they often lack an effective solution

to deal with the enormous issue of anonymizing proxies. To prevent users from bypassing filtering

controls, the following two components are critical in forming a defense against anonymizing proxy use:

A reputation-based service that actively seeks out new anonymizing proxies as they are

published and updates the filtering database at frequent, regular intervals

A real-time proxy detection engine that automatically inspects traffic for signs that it’s being routed through a proxy, effectively closing the door on private proxies or other proxies not identified through the reputation service.

Real-time predictive malware filtering

Real-time predictive malware filtering goes a long way to closing the gap left by reputationbased filters. All web traffic passes through a scanner designed to identify both known and newly emerging zero-day malware. The malware

engine is optimized for low-latency scanning and whenever a user accesses a website, irrespective

of its reputation or category, the traffic is scanned using a combination of signatures and behaviorbased

technologies.

It is worth noting that this type of real-time scanning has a further advantage over traditional URL filters, in that the filtering is, almost by definition, bi directional – both the user request to, and information returning from, the web server are scanned. In addition to detecting known malware as it moves across legitimate sites, this

bi-directional filtering can also provide protection against new threats regardless of where they are

hosted.

The use of real-time predictive threat filtering remains uncommon amongst many of the leading web filtering security solutions in the market today. Many security vendors are currently relying on signatures alone. Others who are fairly recent entrants to the market claim comprehensive solutions but lack the evidence to prove they are

delivering fully proactive protection.

Content-based filtering

Content-based filtering analyzes all web traffic on the network to determine the true filetype of content coming back from a website and can allow or disallow this traffic, based on corporate policy.

Key questions to ask a prospective vendor

Does the URL database used for your reputation-based filtering have global

coverage?

How frequently is your product updated to cover new threats?

How many new threat-hosting sites are identified daily?

Do you scan all incoming traffic for malware in real-time?

Do you use your own technology for malware scanning or rely on third-parties?

Is your malware scanning engine signature-based or does it use behavioral analysis?

Is there an additional cost for real-time malware filtering?

Is there a performance impact for real-time malware filtering?

How many anonymizing proxies do you catalog daily?

Does your solution identify anonymizing proxy use in real time?

Do you analyze the true content of files, or rely on the extension or the MIME-type?

Do you scan HTTPS-encrypted traffic?

Can you demonstrate real research expertise in web threats?

Do you have independent statistics of your proactive web threat detection rates?

Can I see a demo of the admin console to see how easy it is to use?

Are there on-board monitors to track software, hardware and traffic health?

How are issues reported to the administrator? Via email? Via phone call?

Do you provide real-time uptime monitoring to assure the system is available 24/7?

Conclusion

Every minute of every day, cybercriminals are looking to exploit web traffic for commercial

gain, and since web browsing is integral to most businesses’ day-to-day activities, the web gateway

must be equipped with a security solution that enables business and users to be productive while

providing the security essential to ensure a risk-free experience.

Organizations looking to protect against the growing threat of web-based malware need a

solution that above all demonstrates its security attributes and combines powerful site and content

controls with low-impact, effective administration.

At the same time end-user expectations and requirements for speed, efficiency, and open access to the tools and sites they need must be met. Solutions which fail to meet these demands for security, control, performance, and accessibility will ultimately fail the organization.

Content filters scan the actual content of a file, rather than simply looking at the file extension or

the MIME-type reported by the web server, and so can identify and block files that are masquerading

as innocent/allowed filetypes but really contain unauthorized content. A file might, for example,

have a .TXT extension but in fact be an executable file.

By enabling enforcement of only business type content, this pillar of protection enables organizations to create policies around a variety of content types that can be used to send malware, thereby reducing the risks of infection.

For example Windows executables or screensavers might be disallowed. Content-based filtering also improves

bandwidth optimization by blocking large or resource-hungry content, such as streaming video.

User education as a tool for defense

Many businesses have successfully educated users about how to spot email-borne threats, and while

the fight against web-based threats relies much more heavily on sophisticated technology, users can and should be engaged in the fight.

Many firms already have procedures in place that define which websites are considered appropriate, but few have updated these to include guidance on how to avoid infection whilst surfing the net.

A good policy will dictate that:

Employees must never open spam emails

Employees must never click on links included in emails sent from unknown senders

IT must ensure that the organization’s web browsers are patched at all time

Employees should minimize their non work-related browsing for both security and productivity reasons.

This article is being written in early June, 2009.

Why is that related to the topic?

Because if you\’re reading this any later than six months post-publication, chances are half the information here is badly outdated, perhaps even completely inaccurate. The Internet is the embodiment of rapid change and innovation, and even a self-admitted geek like your author has a hard time keeping up with all of the communications tools available, only some of which are clearly useful for reputation management.

The potential roles online tools end up playing aren\’t always obvious at first. Twitter started strictly as a social networking tool. But then people were using Twitter to communicate from the site of natural disasters. Soon, others were “Tweeting” breaking news of all sorts, while some Twitter users found it was a great way to instantly complain about…anything. Including you. Twitter had evolved, in months, into a way for those who intend you harm to start immediately blasting your reputation.

Even with well-established tools, such as Google search, most people aren\’t aware that it\’s possible not just to set up Google news alerts, but to set up a Google “comprehensive” search that will cover anything that is indexed by Google about your topic – blogs, images, video, groups, etc. There\’s a well-written explanation of how to do that at http://www.alertrank.com/google-alerts-getting-started.html.

If there\’s a topic, a company name, a person\’s name, a brand name that you want to keep tabs on, this is a great (and free!) option.

Here, in alphabetical order, are some other tools I\’m currently using:

CustomScoop (www.customscoop.com) – Still my preferred online media monitoring. There are some others with more robust features (and higher fees), but this one works for my needs.

Pipl (www.pipl.com) and Zabasearch (www.zabasearch) – Shockingly useful search engines for information about individuals. Some of the info is free, some is (usually low) fee-paid. I can pretty much guarantee you that this is where private investigators start looking for missing people without having to call in a favor at the local police department. I find Pipl\’s initial results have more depth.

TweetBeep (www.tweetbeep.com) – The Twitter equivalent of Google Alerts.

TweetDeck (www.tweetdeck.com) – Allows me to track Tweets by individual or subject, with quick links for sending my own Tweets out.

TweetTag (www.tweettag.com) – Search what\’s been on Twitter over the past 24 hours.

Twoogle (http://twoogle.browsys.com) – This is a very new service that lets you search Google and Twitter at the same time.

WhosTalkin.com (http://www.whostalkin.com) – A social media search engine that tracks a wide range of blogs, major news portals, social networking sites, even images and forums.

You don\’t have to be a geek to take advantage of these tools, but you do need to employ one who has sufficient training and experience to collect accurate information about how your most important asset – your reputation – is being managed online. Technophobes have no place as corporate leaders in the 21st Century. Otherwise, you are allowing that asset to be managed by people who either don\’t care about it or are actively hostile to your interests.
