This Week In Technology February 12Th: Apple

Last week we covered Google exclusively, but this week we will spread the love around a bit more and share what is going on at some of the other big names. In an effort to be fair, we’ll go alphabetically.

Apple

This week Apple had an interesting announcement. No, not another “iDevice,” but it is related. In fact, recent research shows that Apple’s® iPhone™ is now more popular than Nintendo’s® DS™ and Sony’s® PSP as a gaming device. This is huge news for app developers and for those still weighing the value of an app for their business.

As if we didn’t already recognize the iPhone as an immensely popular platform (not to mention the iPad and iPod Touch, which also use the same OS 3.2 platform and are compatible with all iPhone apps), we now have more evidence that developing apps can be very profitable, and profits for individual developers may eventually rival that of game developers for the DS and PSP.

Facebook

Besides a new layout, there is some really cool stuff happening in the world of Facebook. First, a report by Business Week forecasts that by 2012 sales of virtual goods will reach $3.6 billion, up from $1.6 billion this year.

What does that mean? It means that all the Facebook games, widgets and apps are set to make huge amounts of money just by selling digital flowers, digital credits, Farmville dollars, and other virtual goods. Even though the virtual goods market extends far beyond just Facebook, the company is also rumored to be planning a universal Facebook currency that is usable for all applications, much like Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE® marketplace.

Although it’s probably important to point out that huge market success does not guarantee individual success, this forecast provides a boost to investors with a good business plan and a willingness to try something new. In fact, we are really interested in social networking application development, and we would love to help you develop your idea.

In other Facebook news, there are some rumors and upcoming changes. First, it is rumored that Facebook will be getting its own email client, meaning that users could get a @facebook.com email address.

Also this week, Facebook partnered with AOL to integrate Facebook Chat into AIM, and vice-versa. This allows users to chat with their AIM and Facebook contacts without having to switch between windows. It also integrates Lifestream, which aggregates updates and feeds from multiple social media sites into the AIM environment and allows users to follow updates and chat with both users simultaneously.

Google

It has been a busy week for Google and unfortunately we cannot fit everything into a single post. However, there are some things that we are pretty excited about.

First, let’s start with the under-reported. Google has been testing televised QR codes to advertize apps. QR codes are basically complicated bar codes that most smart phones can read (by using the camera), and that provide information to the phone. In this case, Google was displaying the QR code during a broadcast on The Weather Channel, along with the message “Android Users Scan Here.”

If users scanned the QR code, it would take them to the Android™ app market where people could download an official The Weather Channel app.

Although this definitely is not a huge technological leap, it provides a much needed connection between existing dots. It is really just a neat way to integrate apps and user feedback into traditional advertising. This could become much more common in the future, and could easily be integrated into all the “check out our new app” commercials that you see on TV now (and works for iPhone apps as well).

Second in Google-related news, and probably the biggest news item of the week is Buzz. As any regular Gmail™ user has noticed, Google has incorporated a social media application directly into Gmail. It is a mix between Twitter™ and Flicker™, allowing users to post status updates, follow other users, and upload pictures.

Despite some recent privacy updates Buzz continues to receive criticism because of the difficulty in controlling who can and cannot follow you, and because it publically displays who you follow, and who follows you as a default. We are pretty excited to see how Buzz evolves, and so far it has been a positive experience for us here. We mentioned last week that Google was opening an app store for Google Docs™ and other Google services, and so it will be interesting to see if they allow third-party applications for Buzz as well.

We are also excited to see how Google develops its new acquisition: the Aardvark social search engine. Next week, Google is also set to release Android 2.1™, the latest upgrade to the Android platform which will provide much anticipated features. Oh, and Google added a “Ski-view” for many of the 2010 Olympic™ ski events that enables users to get a first person perspective on many events by using Google Maps™.

Also, we are looking forward to next week’s Mobile World Congress, the largest tradeshow for mobile phone makers and related technologies. Stay tuned.

Why are you in business? Some people say it’s to get rich. Others say it’s so they can be their own boss. Why do you do what you do?

Do you enjoy your work? Do you bounce out of bed in the morning eager to begin the day, tackle a project, or solicit new business?

Business owners typically have a vision for the future of their company. More often than not the path to achieving that vision may become blurred or even rocky on occasion.

What do you do when that happens? Here are alternatives used by some business owners:

1. Consult a mentor.

2. Take a class or check out some online forums.

3. Take a break. Go for a walk. Read a book.

4. Initiate a brainstorming session.

5. Doodle, Squiggle, or Journal thoughts and ideas. Don’t be concerned if they’re random. Any one of them could produce the solution or alternative.

That’s been revisited… now let’s build the business.

1. Log on to all of your established professional networking sites and post something about your business. Promote yourself!

2. Write one article or web press release… and Publish It!

3. Refer an associate or colleague to a business professional that will benefit from their services.

Linked In is a great site for networking. I highly recommend joining Linked In Groups that focus on your peers (You can learn from them.) and your target market. No one will promote like you will!

No one will extol the virtues of the products or services you offer with the same excitement and intensity that you will. The internet opens doors for publicity and marketing that were once either inaccessible or non-existent for business owners. In addition to your current sales and marketing plan, begin a strategy of writing and posting informational articles and press releases about your company.

Your articles and press releases should, of course, include big news but are also for all occasions (i.e. new staff member on your team, business event your company is sponsoring, new product being offered, your personal review of developments in your industry, etc.). It is beneficial to target journalists on occasion, and some press release sites only target journalists, but don’t forget about the interests of your target customer. Include offers that compel your target audience to respond to your press release. Include links that drive traffic to your web site and/or blog. Add social media tags so your release can be found. Optimize your releases with keywords relevant to common searches for your business. It’s up to you to blow your own horn louder and longer than anyone else will. One thing Twitter isn’t is unpopular. It grew over 1400% from June of 2008 through June of 2009, one of the fastest growing services of all time on the web. And an expanding feature set is attracting even more users to this micro-blogging oddity. Twitter is a lot of things to a lot of people. So many, in fact, reluctant adopters are often left asking, “What is Twitter?”

Twitter Isn’t a Little Black Book
Once you have over 50 followers, and depending on how generous some of them are with the minutiae of their lives, you can’t read all of their tweets. This is the first lesson of Twitter. So it doesn’t matter how many people you follow, or how few. Twitter is different for everyone, but the number of people you follow doesn’t have to be constrained necessarily to the number of people you can realistically follow. I follow people whose tweets interest me those whose bios contain information indicating they may be useful to me in some way. Do they share my interests? Are they near me? Are they in my industry? Potential clients?

Follow to be reminded, search to read. If I’m interested in a person’s tweets, I follow them. They’ll appear in my list of followers and when I peruse that list I’ll be reminded to visit their Twitter page from time to time. If I’m interested in what people are saying about a particular topic, I search on that topic.

But forget about trying to read every tweet that comes in on your main feed.

Twitter Isn’t Slow
Twitter, with its shortened URLs and users with huge follower lists, is the perfect medium for responding to information and disseminating information quickly to a large number of people. It can come in handy when you want to quickly get in on a conversation in social media. This is why it’s important to have targeted followers and followers who are influencers, and as many of these types of followers as possible. If they like your tweet, they might retweet, helping you to spread your message quickly.

When a tweet is retweeted often, it’s important to a particular group. A tweet that goes viral is recent, and the social signals it generates are now. If that tweet is about you or your organization, it’s good to be able to respond quickly, particularly if it happens to be a complaint.

Twitter Isn’t a Newspaper, a Book or a Magazine
Twitter is a micro-blog. It spits out tweets 140 characters at a time that contain useful words and phrases that are easy to search and that give a good indication of what’s on people’s minds. Lots of people, not just a handful who sit on an editorial board.

Twitter Isn’t Feckless
By midday on January 12, 2010, the top ten Twitter topics were related to Haiti or earthquake relief. On June 17, 2009, the State Department asked Twitter to hold off on scheduled maintenance to its servers to avoid disruptions in what had become a useful source of information coming out of Iran during its election. Twitter Isn’t a Technology That’s Going Away
The Twitter syntax is so simple and effective Facebook has adopted parts of it. Type the @ symbol followed by a letter in Facebook and you’ll see friends’ names appear. And it’s search capabilities are so strong Google began including live Twitter rolls on its search pages for timely topical searches.

Historically, search engines have determined the importance of web pages and delivered to us the most relevant ones based on our search terms. But it takes time to determine the relevancy of a web page. What about recent results? This is where Twitter soars. It gives us recent results, many of which are relevant. It’s About The Content, Not The Pipes!

Forgive me, but aside from the horrible economy, 2009 is starting to sound a lot like 1999 at the intersection of communication and technology. As with the dot.com explosion, everyone, it seems, is in technological awe of how Twitter will change our lives forever (last year, of course, it was Facebook).

This reminds me of 1999, when “everyone” was sure the day would come when we ALL bought EVERYTHING on the Internet, including groceries. Well, that prediction didn’t quite come true. It’s not a failure of technology. Certainly, ecommerce is here to stay. I am not a curmudgeon who challenges technology (I have my 3G iPhone loaded with plenty of cool apps).

No, it’s a failure of focus. You see, communication is not all about the fact that you can Tweet or Twitter or that you’re Twittering right now (with or without excitement). No, communication is all about communication. Well, duh.

As I often tell clients, if we were still dragging clubs and living in caves, we could still tell everyone who cared (and many who didn’t) what we just ate for lunch without sending a Tweet. It would just take a lot longer and be a heck of a lot less immediate, with much smaller reach.

At times like these, a useful analogy is helpful.

The delivery of clean, fresh water has been a human need since the dawn of time. The same is true of successful communication. Societies, the record shows, need both to grow and thrive.

Yet when I examine conversations (online and otherwise) about the need for fresh water in sub-Saharan Africa, the debate is not about how cool the pipes are, how thick their walls are, the size of the pumping stations, water pressure, etc., etc. Now I know that among a small community of companies and people who build pipes and water stations, that dialogue exists. Among those who need fresh water and those who hope to provide it? Nope.

It’s the same with communication. It’s about the content, not the pipes! Sure, I use TweetDeck. I’m up to speed on CoTweet and lots of other apps and sites and communities that are useful tools. Tools. Yes, tools, as in pipes that provide fresh water, not the live-giving liquid itself. As in, tools that enable communication.

Review your Tweetstream. And then ask yourself this question: Just because I CAN Twitter my every move, should I? There is where the real debate belongs: How can we use these tools to communicate more effectively and more efficiently?

When Twitter enables the first report of the Hudson River plane crash, there’s the germ of a communication opportunity out there. While the ability to send a TwitPic from a breaking news event is noteworthy, what’s truly revolutionary is the process of figuring out how to use this technology to tell compelling stories to interested audiences, not the technology itself.

That’s our focus here at WordWrite, and with the explosion of instant, broad technological tools to communicate in the 21st century, I would argue that it’s never been more important to focus on what you have to say, rather than getting lost in the weeds of how you can say it.

12. Your Profile: Your latest tweets and replies don’t mean much to someone that doesn’t know you. Your profile is the only place you have to tell people who you are. Also, your profile is displayed on Twitter’s Suggested Users page. Leaving it blank or non-descriptive doesn’t encourage people to add you.11. Authority Rules: – According to Brian Clark Authority Rules, whatever you’re doing, make sure you’re speaking. Learn as much as you could to say so much that makes sense at all times, its certain that people will follow you.
10. Make a gimmick: start a contest. Offer a gimmick that may never happened, you surely will add thousands of followers. Its a brilliant idea.
9. Follow Influencial People: Follow the top twitter users and watch what they tweet. Make them your role model, pattern yourself after them. Pay attention to the type of content they sent out and how they address their audiences.
8. Diplay Pictures: Pictures are heavily spread around. There’s a picture from US Airways Flight 1549 which was viewed over 350,000 times. and they are still seeing it.
7. Create Tweet Bait- One of the best ways to get a sudden flow in Twitter followers is to create a post that begs to be retweeted. It’s just like link bait, but for Twitter. So, what kind of Tweets are bait worthy? Anything from controversial opinions to open ended compelling questions to Twitter based contests can spread like wildfire in the perfect storm.
6. Make it a Resource- If you’re using Twitter for professional reasons, this is something you should already be striving toward. You need to establish yourself as a leading authority in your field. How do you do this? By keeping your Tweets relevant; giving insight into hot industry topics; linking out to other great resources; and engaging thoughtfully into user-generated discussions about your industry.
5. Tweet Meaningful Content – Simply tweet information that are interesting or useful and people will follow you. If you tweet professional content or spread fresh news then you’re very likely to get followers.
4. Link It Up: Put links to your Twitter profile everywhere. Link it on your Digg, LinkedIn, Facebook, blog, email signature, and everywhere else you live online. Also, check out the great feedburner-like badges from TwitterCounter for your blog.
3. Participate In Discussions and Events: – You need actually engage in discussions e.g. replying to other people’s tweets, respond to a need, answer questions, give support if you can. Twitter is about interaction, support, socializing and relationships. Use search.twitter.com lists the hot ‘trending topics. Look for the hash topics and jump in on the conversation.
2. Get Listed in Twitter Directories- Just like with your personal website, you want to get your Twitter profile listed in directories also. Sites like Just Tweet It and TwitDir they make it easy for you to list your profile in relevant categories. While this won’t generate a sudden surge in followers, it will help you maintain your visibility over time.

The most deadly Twitter mistake

Using Twitter to send out ’spammy’ and ‘in-your-face’ promotional tweets will get you shunned by the Twitter community faster than a burp at the Queen’s table.

Think of your tweets like conversational comments at a nice cocktail party. People are there to have fun and enjoy what they are doing; they don’t want a sales pitch shoved in their face. You Twitter audience feels the same.

Your tweets must leave your Twitter followers feeling benefited by reading your comments, not targeted as a sales prospect.

Twitter is a community: you have to participate

This is an easy Twitter mistake to avoid. The old adage is true; “You have to give to receive.” You have to participate in the Twitter world.

Follow other Tweeters, respond to their tweets, participate in tweet threads. Don’t expect results if you only send out tweets that benefit you and never interact with other tweeters.

The logic follows like this: If you want Twitter to be an effective tool you have to develop a following to receive your tweets. To develop a following you have to write tweets people want to read. If you want people to read your tweets you have to make them feel benefited by doing so. Think of it like you do your incoming phone calls. If you don’t know the number, or recognize it as a sale call, you will probably return the call later or not at all.

But if you see it’s a friend’s number, odds are you will take the call.

There are many uses to which Twitter can be put, and this is the first of several articles describing some of these. Twitter marketing is a form of internet marketing that uses the benefits of Twitter as a social media phenomenon.

When Jack Dorsey created Twitter back in 2006 as a means of SMS-type communication using only 140 characters (including spaces), little did he know that it would become a world-wide phenomenon worth untold millions of dollars. Little wonder, then, that it has found a number of uses other than simple text messages, but has the potential to become a significant marketing tool.

If you are like me, and are involved in various forms of internet marketing, you will find that some of those that you follow tweet nothing but adverts for their products. There are better ways of using Twitter than that to promote your websites and products, which you will realize if you also have a Facebook account and have integrated Twitter with Facebook, or any of the other social networking sites that also integrate with Twitter.

Every tweet I make appears on my Facebook home page. That means I can advertise all my websites and products on Twitter and Facebook with one click. That’s cool, and I am now looking at other social networking sites that cab integrated with Twitter to achieve the same thing. That’s using Twitter marketing at its best. However, that is just one simple way in which Twitter can be used to promote your products, and there are also better ways of promoting your websites and products that blatantly mentioning them in your tweets.

An important aspect of Twitter is your followers. I have many followers, but only a relatively small proportion of them would be interested in what I have to offer them. However, luckily there are ways to attract followers that will be interested in what you have to offer. These techniques are not difficult to use, and not only can they be used to attract followers to follow you, but also they then attract others to follow them. In that way you can make Twitter go viral for you. Twitter marketing is awsome when viral.

This is particularly true if you have affiliate programs that others can sell for you. However, before Twitter can be used that way, you have to learn how. Not only that but you might also have to learn how to use Twitter at all, since not everybody registered with Twitter can actually use it properly other than just send a few tweets now and again.

You need to know how to find the right kind of people to follow you, and also who you should follow yourself. Everybody wants to follow Britney, but when I want to know what she or anybody else is up to, I don’t have to put up with all her tweets filling my pages but simply visit her Twitter page. That’s the way to follow people without having your pages filled so quickly that you don’t have time to read anything.

I have just given you two tips in the short period of this article, but these are the very simple ones you should be able to think out for yourself. There are many more ways to use Twitter in ways that can help you without overloading your own Twitter page. Twitter marketing is a skill to be learned.

Lots of people spend energy discussing what iPhone can and can not do, compared to its competitors like HTC, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Blackberry and many more. Some are of the opinion that iPhone is the largest invention since the wheel was discovered, and others think it is a hoax. What is the real strategy behind Apples’ work on this product?

iPhone is not foremost a telephone. iPhone is a small computer and media player that you also can make phone calls with.

Apple has made the first handheld computer platform that is so user friendly that you and me actually want to explore its potential it can offer you. Everybody that has dealt with the smart phones, PDAs’ and pocket PCs’ in the mobile and computer industry, knows that it is not something to be taken for granted. The selection of free or shareware type of software is tremendous already, but is nothing to what will be available partly for free, and partly towards payment when Apple launches their shop for iPhone software in their AppStore.

Lots of the hacked iPhone software available now can be characterized as hobby projects, but after Apple opened up their platform for developers through their Software Development Kit for iPhone. Lots of serious software developers has entered the race to be the first and best iPhone developers in the market.

This is where the iPhone strategy differs. People are used to pay for music, movies and tv-series to their iPod or iPhone in iTunes Stores already. Then the road to shop software for a few bucks is short. All evidence points into the direction that user friendliness and shopping selection in AppStore will be in its own class, and differ dramatically from what the other cell phone producers can offer. How many times did you shop for software to your Nokia or SonyEricsson?

Just like with the iPod, Apple is building a closed eco system around the product. iPhone software will only be purchased through the AppStore, not very user friendly but it works. This is how the iPhone will become a money machine, that will tap into your account every time you just have to have that application you need.

With the 2.0 version of the iPhone release on July 11th Apple targets the business segment of the market as well. Integration towards Microsoft Exchange, high level of security and support for the push technology enables new email to automatically come into iPhone. At the same time the changes you make in your contact list or calendar at work will be updated on the iPhone.

Eleven Things You Will Hate About the Iphone 3G

The iPhone 1.0 and 2.0 has been in the market now for a short while and has won the attraction of many users. However, one would expect some features to follow this high-tech gadget as it comes into the market in July. There are several features that Steve Jobs do not talk about when he launches this latest version of iPhone, identical to 2.0 version only with 3G and GPS on it. So what am I complaining about? Why do I just not get excited and tell everybody how great this new Apple gadget is?

Well, first of all, this is a cellphone, and should compete with other cellphones’ and their features and capabilities. It is just fair to let people know that there are cell phones in the market that can offer things that Apple iPhone can not. I am not saying that iPhone 3G is bad, oh no, I would say the opposite, it is a great all in one gadget, improved with its 3G and GPS ability, which maybe put it in the front line when it comes to smart cell phones. However, there are still some features I would like to see in this phone, in order to at least “talk” to my other gadgets I have at home or work.

1. No MMS. There were no words mentioned about MMS during the presentation at all, and there are no net pages that mention whether it will be available in version 2.0 of iPhone. Several blog sites have announced that they will integrate their services direct on the cell phone with the option to load pictures and text. We think that the telecom industry will miss this feature most, as they will loose their chance to offer more expensive animated picture services on their network. The opening for third party software on the iPhone makes it possible for the network providers to add this service on if they feel for it.

2. No video recording. The camera on the iPhone is more than capable to record videos, and with up to 16 GB storage it should be enough storage to record more than most of us need. But there is no video function, and this is a petty since Apple makes superior video editing software for their computers. If any programmers wants to, he can make a video recorder through the camera available. So for those who wants to make a software for video recording, it is just to start right away.

3. No docking station. The tiny plastic stand that comes together with version 1.0 of the iPhone is now extra add on. This is the same development as happened with the iPod, where Apple went from full package with charger and docking station to a package where you hardly got a power cable included.

4. No video conference. This is maybe the least missed features in the iPhone as this is a very little used feature in the network provider’s product portfolio.

5. Still only 2 Megapixles in the camera. It is a myth that more megapixles makes better pictures, but as long as all other factors are the same, it would be better with more mega pixles on the camera. iPhone makes very good pictures with the small camera available, so it is really a shame that Apple does not provide more megapixles on the camera than they do.

6. No wirless iTunes syncronization. You still have to connect through the cable to transfer music. With Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G the cable should have been history for the small updates one have to perform daily, like music f.inst. The first synchronization of the iPhone has to be performed by cable, as 16 GB will take a while on the Wi-Fi, but the rest of the time should have been able to be performed through wireless connection.

7. No Adobe Flash. iPhone has a very good internet browser. It is so good that it is used for most mobile traffic to Google, this despite that iPhone is nowhere close to dominate the market on the cell phone side. It is therefore disappointing that Flash is not supported on the iPhone, and even more disappointing when you want to browse a web page that you need to see a flash movie before you can go further into the page.

8. No Java. This means that you still can not use several net banks used around the world on iPhone net browser.

9. No extra Bluetooth functions. Bluetooth on the existing version 1.0 of iPhone is limited in use. You can not send files between iPhone and other cell phones. Nor can it transfer between the iPhones or other iPhones..There is no option for using bluetooth head phones and there is no chance to connect to a PC.

10. No special price for you, my friend! This marks the end where you can take your stronger currency and buy a iPhone in US shops and then hack it home. Sure, the hackers will find ways to avoid the blockings made on the iPhone, but you will need to pay anyway. The reason people could buy the first version of iPhone cheap, was because the consumer could sign the subscription at home. The consumer did not commit to anything in the shop, and this opened for using local SIM-cards. In the next version of the iPhone, the consumer will demand you sign a subscription in the shop before you can take the iPhone with you home.

11. Language selection. It is almost not understandable how Apple leaves the Arabic language out of its language selection. Arabic language is the 5th largest language in the world, and has a high potential user group with a great purchase power. So I still not get it Steve Jobs, why did you not include this in your new gadget?

Watch Out When Buying the New Version of Iphone 3G

The old version that has been available around the world as a hacked version, because it otherwise would not work in other countries than SIM cards bought in the USA.

Up til now it has been possible to go into an Apple store in the USA and take with you an iPhone without any subscription for a network provider.

The next version of iPhone with 3G net and assisted GPS will not be sold with this opportunity. Subscription will have to be signed in the store, and will last for 18 months in the USA. There might be a chance to open the new iPhone for other SIM cards, but the network operator will regardless get his money for the subscription.

A lot of auctions has appeared on the eBay internet site after the launch of iPhone 3G last Tuesday, despite the fact that the cell phone is not for sale yet. 11th of July the iPhone 3G will be launched for sale in around 70 countries around the world.

If you buy a iPhone 3G from an eBay auction now, it is not easy to tell what you will get in the mail. In the best case you will pay for another person to stand in line to purchase a cell phone locked to a network in the USA.

Future Apple Devices Looking to Solar Power

Apple ha filed a patent for integrating solar cells into portable devices by placing them underneath the layers of a touch-sensitive display, according to the delivered patent application.

Solar power could help make devices truly portable, freeing from the need for wires to connect them to a power supply.

The larger the solar cell panel is the better it is for generating electricity, but as the patent “Solar cells on portable devices” warns, after allowing space for buttons, screens and a way to hold the device, only a small area is left on most devices for solar cells.

One of the ways around this dilemma is suggested in the patent as to stack a touch-sensitive layer, a display and solar panel on top of one another. That could make Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch good candidates for such a power supply, as the display occupies almost the entire face of those devices.

The use of solar powered charging in portable devices is starting to get more attention, for more immediate consumer use as well.

When Vodafone announced its plan in April 2008, to reduce its emissions of the greenhouse gas CO2 by 50 percent by 2020, it also announced plans for solar-powered phone chargers and universal phone chargers for Vodafone-branded handsets.

At the recent ITU Telecom Africa 2008 conference, Ugandan Minister for Communications and Information and Communication Technologies Ham-Mukasa Mulira talked about trials of solar-powered charging conducted there, which had showed promising results.

With the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK), programmers can make your ideas reality – even if you yourself don’t know the difference between a C-pointer and a SQLite database. But before you go ahead and post your application idea to the buzzing iPhone project area on www.Elance,com. here are some pointers to get your project kick-started:

Study the Masters
Apple has already spent a lot of time thinking about how to present information and build interactive applications on the iPhone. The applications that come with the iPhone are the results of this research. Study them in great detail and try to apply as many of the user interface metaphors as possible to your application.

Not only will Apple be flattered if you imitate the user interface in their applications, but they actually mandate it to a great level of detail as described in their Human Interface Guidelines.

Dream in Color Screens
Most applications for the iPhone will be very visual. Therefore it makes sense to provide your requirements as screen images or sketches. You don’t have to be a graphics artist to do this effectively. An iPhone programmer is looking for the following information:

- The type of layout each screen should have

- The buttons on the screens

- The actions associated with each button

The exact shape and format of your screen sketches is secondary. As long as they are readable, it’s a great way to communicate your application design to a programmer.

Be Realistic About Your Budget
Look at other iPhone projects posted on Elance to get a sense for the bid amounts on these projects. Read the descriptions of these projects to see if they seem to be larger or smaller projects than what you have in mind. If you set your budget to under $500 for something that is realistically going to take a programmer two months to implement, you are not likely to attract many bidders.

From a programming perspective, some things are easy to do on the iPhone, while other seemingly simple things are very time consuming. For example the beautiful cover-flow animation used in the music application on the iPhone should be simple to use in other applications. Unfortunately you can’t. If you want this animation within your application it will have to be written from scratch, probably costing a one month of work.

If you talk to an approved iPhone developer early in your application design process you can learn how to get most out of your budget by avoiding the things that are really difficult to do on the iPhone.

Don’t Be Too Original
iPhone users already know how to do certain tasks on their phones by convention. For example, if you tap an item in a list that has a > icon next to it, you expect to be taken to another screen with more information about that item. If your application needs similar functionality, don’t be creative and come up with a new way to solve the same problem. Use the conventions already established by Apple.

New conventions are difficult to establish especially with the touch interface because there is no way to discover how your application works on the iPhone. Unlike a website where you can hover with the mouse pointer over areas that look like you can interact with them and a tool tip or the status bar will reveal some clues to you.

Know Your Limitations
The current version of the iPhone SDK, which is used to write applications for the iPhone, has many restrictions and limitations. Some of them are common sense, e.g. you can’t send text messages from an application. Imagine an application that sends out thousands of text messages without your knowledge, who is going to pay the phone bill for that?

Other restrictions are maddening: applications cannot access the log of phone calls, or interact in any way with the calendar or the music stored on the iPhone.

To Apple’s credit, the iPhone SDK is an amazing piece of software especially given that it was publicly released as a Beta just three months ago. Some of the shortcomings listed above will likely be addressed in future releases of the SDK.

As a buyer with an idea for an iPhone application, you should educate yourself about these limitations before you spend too much time designing an application that is impossible to implement. Talk to a developer or company that specializes in iPhone development (and there are many available on Elance) and they can help you get on the right track from the start.

A new business model has forced its way forward for the new 3G Apple iPhone

Why could we say this? There are two statements from Apple and AT&T that confirms this new trend is coming.

Apple alerted the SEC that although it had signed deals with 70 countries…

“…Under the vast majority of these agreements, Apple will not receive follow-on revenue generating payments from carriers”

AT&T, for its part, warned investors of…

“…potential dilution to earnings per share (EPS) from this initiative in the $0.10 to $0.12 range this year and next.”

When the Apple IPhone was first introduced, Apple made some rather unusual terms connected to its launch. Customers had to pay full retail price for it and carriers had to share a sizable cut of their monthly revenue with the manufacturer.

Now, the carriers will be subsidizing the cost of the phone, making up for it in monthly charges, and they are no longer funneling a share of that monthly revenue to Apple. Apple is now beginning to play by the rules that all other cell phone hardware manufacturers play by in the growing cell phone market.

This will also put some stress on the new market segment that made its way during the launch of the 1st generation IPhones, namely the unlocking business. The incentives for unlocking will disappear and that may make lots of unlockers around the world out of a job for the new generation IPhones under the new business model proposed now.

However, one major incentive for unlocking remains, especially for Europeans. Those who travel to other countries with unlocked phones can use local prepaid service plans rather than paying exorbitant international roaming fees to their home carriers.

The New Generation Iphone With 3G and GPS – an End to the Unlocking Business?

Twice as fast and half the price, and it is coming July 11th, it is a Phone, iPod, and Internet in one fast 3G device.

The new iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G networking, built-in GPS, and iPhone 2.0 software that supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs hundreds of third party applications built with the iPhone SDK. Available in 22 countries on July 11, iPhone 3G comes in two models: an 8GB model priced at $199 (US) and a 16GB model priced at $299 (US).

The iPhone will have fast 3G wireless technologies, GPS mapping, support for enterprise features like Microsoft Exchange, and the new App Store, iPhone 3G puts even more features at your fingertips. And like the original iPhone, it combines three products in one — a revolutionary phone, a widescreen iPod, and a breakthrough Internet device with rich HTML email and a desktop-class web browser. iPhone 3G.

The phone will be sold in more countries. Apple added five countries beyond the U.S. for the first phone, but the second one will go on sale in 22 countries on July 11. Apple has said it will add more countries at a rapid clip and reach 70 by the end of the year. That takes away one of main incentives for unlocking the phone.

Apple is abandoning the unusual arrangement under which the iPhone was being sold. Customers could buy them from a carrier or from Apple without activating them on a service plan, and that meant customers could go home and unlock the phones — and never sign up with AT&T.

The new phone will be subsidized by carriers, which accounts for its lower price: $199 for the 8-gigabyte model, down from $399. This brings the phone’s marketing in line with standard industry practices.

The carriers plan to make back what they spend on the subsidy through service fees, which means they likely will require two-year service contracts from everyone who buys the phone. AT&T said buyers will have to activate service before leaving the store with an iPhone.

This may put an end to the unlocking business that has been expanding on the internet and in various countries around the world. We just have to wait and see.

Video Recording With the Iphone is Possible and We Tell You How

DreamCatcher offers video recording for your iPhone

iPhone users would like to have the ability to perform video recordings. DreamCatcher tries to bring some advanced features to their product. They want you to choose them obviously, and are going to offer the capabilities to make that happen.

The DreamCatcher video recorder application uses the mpeg4 encoding method. Encoding with mpeg4 provides optimum quality vs size, with the ability to compress an hour of video taken from the iPhone to just 60MB. DreamCatcher has devised a way to make this less of a limitation by letting the video be saved to the iPhone’s memory, and encoded at a later time. There is another iPhone Video Recording which is Working and it is called Drunknbass.

Monster and Friends have created an iPhone application which can record video up to 45 frames per second and working on the final version. Drunknbass beta allows you to record 5 seconds of video at 10 fps with a resolution of 2 megapixels. It doesn’t have any interface, so you just download it, put it in your iPhone’s Applications folder, click on the button and it will start recording. When Drunknbass is finished with the five seconds recording, it will replay the clip once. The final application will be able to record unlimited-sized clips (only constrained by your available space) with up to 30 frames per second and it will have an interface to save your clips (they are looking for developers to help with the graphical side of the software)

Edge – Wifi Use on Your Iphone – How and Why?

So the iPhone works on EDGE networks. But what does this mean and is it good enough?
The iPhone has been designed to work on GPRS, EDGE and Wi-Fi networks but doesn’t include 3G support. Apple has stated this has to do with the power requirements of the 3G chip.
EDGE provides higher download speeds than the 2G network and GPRS (2.5G) but less than what can be achieved with Wi-Fi and 3G. and it has been labeled 2.75G.
The coverage of the EDGE networks around the world is very sparse, some places only 10s of percent actually. And that is disappointing numbers and not good news for the users of iPhone.
Trying to talk up the iPhone’s Wi-Fi compatibility and its deals for free hotspot are not doing the trick either.
EDGE is the existing standard for GSM data networks. GSM is a direct rival to CDMA. In the US, Cingular is the largest GSM provider.
EDGE offers service rated at about quarter Mb/sec. That’s about twice the speed of ISDN (.128 MB/sec), but significantly slower than even the slowest offerings of DSL (.3 to 1.5 Mb/sec), and a fraction of the throughput of 802.11b WiFi (typical: 6.5 Mb/sec).
EDGE is far faster than GPRS or old dialup networks however (both are about .03 Mb/sec), so while EDGE not capable of supporting iChat style video conferencing, it is useful enough to browse web pages, receive HTML emails, and support the other web service features demonstrated on the iPhone such as Google Maps.

EDGE is also widely deployed in the US. Newer generation technologies, including HSUPA and EVDO, are not. If the iPhone supported newer networks at launch, it would offer users less data service coverage at higher service fees. HSUPA does promise a future path for faster data, and will no doubt unlock new applications for future phones.

Along with the confusing acronym soup of HSDPA and HSOPA, HPUPA competes against other mobile 3G standards. Wikipedia says the next set of standards are edging out existing CDMA2000 and EVDO rollouts in some markets.

In addition to the factors of availability and cost, another reason for Apple going with EDGE rather than a faster network is that the iPhone won’t have to rely solely on mobile phone networks for data. It’s designed to use WiFi wherever it’s available.

WiFi is far faster than any mobile networks now in place, including EVDO and HSUPA (2.5 – 5.76 Mb/sec). Typical 802.11b and g offer 6.5 Mb/sec and 20 Mb/sec transfers. WiFi is so much faster because it is designed to serve a much smaller range of local service.

For iPhone users in a school, home, or office with existing WiFi service, automatic use of WiFi for data service will not only be far faster, but far cheaper: free in many cases.

Getting EDGE to work on your iPhone is simple, but require some knowledge about application set up in your iPhone.

Once you have downloaded the iBrickr and the PXL files installed on your iPHone, you can launch iBrickr.exe. You will be able to see the main interface and click on files to browse your phone file system.
Locate your /private/var/root

Right click this file and select “save link as”, you need to save the file as
Preference.plist, you will then upload preference.plist into the following iPhone directory:

NOTE! If you are on firmware 1.1.3, upload the preferences.plist to this directory;
/private/var/preferences/SystemConfiguration
This will overwrite the current file that is already in that directory.

Now grab your iPhone and tap settings – General – Network – EDGE. The APN you will use is wap.voicestream.com, username and password will be guest. Reboot your iPhone and there you are, you should be able to browsw online using EDGE.

NB! After performing this hack you will notice that EDGE will interfere with your WIFI connections whenever it sees it. IF this happens to you, there is a solution for this as well.
Click on the Browse Application button, this will launch a list of 3rd party applications you can install at your will. For our purpose we will install an application called Services. Basically what this does is allow you to turn off the WiFi, Bluetooth and EDGE according to your needs.
Once you are done with the installation, iPhone will reboot and on your Springboard you should see a Services icon, tap on the icon and here you can toggle between EDGE and WiFi connection.

Mexens Technology, with its virtual Navizon GPS system has finally arrived for the iPhone. The program still utilizes “WiFi and cellular tower triangulation techniques,” but according to the firm’s CEO, “this is just as if the iPhone were equipped with a GPS chip.”

Of course, I am still doubtful that this peer-to-peer location approach works just as good as a bonafide GPS receiver, but considering that you won’t be forced to pay the $24.99 purchase price until after 15 days are up, why not give it a go and find out?
And in addition it will take only seconds to find location, as for more robust solutions it will take maybe minutes to locate on the iPhone.
However, if it is long distance between towers, the accuracy will be less of course. So do not plan to use it for geotracking or something like this.

The battle goes on – which one is the most favourable gadget for your portable needs?

First you have to ask yourself as lots of potential buyers of either of the three below products, IPOD, IPOD TOUCH, IPOD Phone or the PSP. We do not talk about the iBook nor do we talk about Nintendos games console in this article, but they could be considered of course. Ibook is very costly but it enable you to use internet and listen to itunes with the same gadget.

What product fit your needs and the potential usage you are going to put it through?

If you look at some main parameters to judge the products more or less objective based on the user profile, you could come closer to the truth.
Look at functionalities like Gaming, Internet, Photo, Video, Music and Storage capacity. You also have to look at the user interface and its design like screen and functionality buttons.
We will try to compile these criteria’s more or less objective so you can evaluate the PSP vs the Ipod/phone products.

Gaming
Only PSP provides serious gaming console capacity and functionality. If you want gaming console capability your choice is clear, you need the Sony PSP and nothing else. There is no other choice.

Internet
Only PSP, Ipod Phone and Touch (latest software release January 2008) provides internet browsing and email capabilities. However the PSP screen is the largest of them all (for userability of web pages). PSP has some issues with some web pages which have to be taken into consideration. Apple products however have not been long enough in market to really test these features yet.

Photo
You get Photo album capabilities in all products more or less, however the PSP needs some upgrade by 3rd party software. What differentiates the products is memory capacity to hold a certain amount of pictures, but also the way you can interface with your photos. Looking at pictures, select, zoom in and out is better in the Ipod touch or the Iphone, utilizing the touch screen and its capabilities.
In all honesty the PSP looks better – the iphone seems to be suffering from a severe white balance problem. Maybe some people prefer that, but as the iphone costs four times as much as the PSP then you have to judge what is more important to meet your requirements. Obviously the PSP has the size advantage but the iPhone is brighter.

Video/Film
All products can hold videos at their internal formats, and several 3rd party software makes it possible to transfer this media between various medias such as PC, Ipod, PSP, cell phones etc. Again the user interface is the main differentiator here, as the touch screen makes it possible to browse the various movies in a fancier and maybe interactive way than in the PSP. However this is a matter of user preference and will be highly subjective to user’s needs and how he/she wants to interact with the gadget. Higher resolution on the PSP versus its competitors is also a point to mention here. So if you want the high resolution and slightly better screen definition, then PSP is definitively your choice.

Music/Audio
You can send your files over and use PSP as you would use an iPod Video, although Apple product has an advantage when it comes to storage. You’ll need to get up to 8Gb MemStick DUO on the PSP to get decent memory, but still much lower than IPOD with its 60Gb capacity. If you want a straight out of the box itunes player, then select the Ipod/touch/phone range, otherwise it will just be a subjective choice as there are lots of 3rd party customization to make the PSP to offer Itunes capability, conversion of audio files etc.

Storage Capacity
You can get up to 8Gb MemStick DUO for the PSP. IPOD leads here with its 60Gb capacity. Utilizing high memory capacity for the PSP will run at a cost as well, which needs to be addressed if compared for this purpose. However the Ipod Touch or Iphone comes with maximum of 8Gb memory and can not be upgraded without consequences for warranty etc. Ipod is superior when it comes to capacity, so if you need to store tens of Gb of music, or video, then your choice is the Ipod machine. If you tend to change content often and want to transfer often, then it is either the PSP or the Iphone/ Ipod Touch choices left. However the Apple product have a slight advantage as their user interface for handling the files are easier.

User interface/Design
Several comparisons of the IPOD screen vs PSP makes PSP the clear choice. When you compare IPOD Touch or IPHONE with PSP there is still a slight advantage to PSP since the screen is larger and it seems to have better color definition and looks crispier in view.
PSP is larger as a console vs either IPOD or Iphone or Ipod Touch, so it is maybe less practical to put in your pocket. However since we talk about different usage of these gadgets, you need to see if this really is a differentiator at all.
The later products from Apple with the touch screen is of course an new technology brought to the table, however you have to judge whether you need it for the purpose you need.
It comes down to touch and feel and what you focus on most. If you focus on screen quality, the Sony PSP is the clear choice. If you focus on the user interface and modern technology, then the Apple series touch or Phone is the selection for you.

I would personally go for the PSP, since my use is internet, movie and games. Since we really talk about a game console here, it gives power to all my favorite games as well as the chance to download some fancy graphics to use as my wall papers, or to manipulate some graphics on my PC or Mac and transfer to my PSP, it makes the choice clear to me. I can read most of my favorites on internet as well as reading my emails pretty effective despite no mouse or keyboard on the PSP, but here it is up to you to select what interface you want or are used to.
However, if you are a music and photo lover, I would maybe lean towards the Ipod touch or Iphone. If you already have an iPod that works well and hold enough music to keep you happy, then go with a new PSP.

So it all depends on what you want the gadget for. If you want to listen to music, get an iPod, if you want to play games, get a PSP.

So it comes down to the question Console or a Phone or a media player?

Iphone is a phone and the PSP is a console, Ipod Touch is a media player simple and easy.

The iPhone is a very pretty and medium to high priced multi-functional handheld device that can be used as a phone. The PSP is a very pretty and low cost multi-functional handheld device that can be used to play games, or fed with some 3rd party software used for a whole lot of things. Sony would prefer you not think of PSP as a handheld, more like a multi-media portable. Several handhelds that acts similar to the iPhone with the touch interface (Treo for instance).

You have to lean towards the price as well as your user profile, there is a large price difference to consider here. But if you want to boost your PSP, the price difference gets less, and can become minimal, especially when you talk about the Ipod Touch from Apple.

The old argument for people saying the PSP was the right choice for you, was that it can play music, watch videos, check email, play games and all in one device. This argument could be used for the Iphone as well, since you have the phone capability into it.

32Gb memory stick is soon to be released, so the PSP will be more costly than the iphone, if not the same price when using this memory. However it will have more than Apple products and more flexibility as you can buy as many memory sticks you want and have one for photos, one for audio and another one for games or email information etc.
In the end, the choice is yours but you need to do the homework first, decide what you need the most in your new gadget and what flexibility you want.
People want the simplest, easist way to get enjoyment. Apple, when designing anything (OS, iPod, Hardware, and now the iPhone) always aims for a high level of ease of use.
With any MP3 player, you don’t have a uniform way of getting music. It might come with applications to rip music, and even tell you where to legally download music. But then you factor in the compatibility. It may also give you a audio converter so everything works with your player, and its own media manager to boot. But with the iPod, you get just iTunes. And it’s that relationship that makes the iPod so dominant in the market. The program will rip your CDs. It has access to the store where every song, regardless of what the RIAA wants, will be 99 cents or 10 USD pr CD. And when you bring in your own music, iTunes will not only add it and organize it, but convert it to AAC if need be. It’s less work on the consumer. That is an appeal. And you have to pay for this convenience. It is the real reason why these products became dominant is for their consumer design.

However the PSP with 3rd party software or as the communities call it “homebrew” has common like music and video playback, image viewing and internet browsing and in those areas I’m sure the PSP will be comparable to the Ipod range products.
The iPhone won’t play any games though, at least they haven’t announced that it will, which is what most people who have a PSP use it for.

Network to support the 2.5G network that the iPhone uses and the network is lacking several places and has to be considered.

Facebook Fan Pages

Everyone is going crazy about the facebook pages! I mean to be honest I never really thought about decorating our facebook fan page until someone asked for my help to do theirs today. I just feel like it’s best to give minimal information then send them off to the real stuff (which is at your website). That’s my personal opinion, but then today I started to get into decorating our facebook. There are a few really cool applications for fan pages for businesses that I think is useful. Below are some tips and applications I think will be useful to those who are planning to create a fan page or fix theirs up.

1. If you have a blog (if not I highly recommend getting one as soon as possible), connect the RSS feed in through your facebook. This will allow facebook to publish your feed without having to post it yourself. You want to try and get your content to as many places as possible and this is a great way.

How To Do This: Go to your fan page, click edit page on the left (under your picture), then go to the notes application (should already be there if not go to more applications and add that app to your page). On the right hand side click on ‘Edit Import Settings’, then just add your blog feed!

2. Another cool new feature is that you are now able to connect your facebook and twitter. This will save you time so you only have to post on one social networking site rather then two!

How To Do This: search for the twitter application in the search bar. On the left hand side click Add To Page. Then go to your settings and sign into twitter and allow the application.

3. Some of these fan pages have additional pages that will allow you to insert HTML. This is useful if you want to add pages about your company, updates on a content, etc. The best application that I have found is fbml. It allows you just add multiple pages and insert whatever content you want.

How To Do This: Go to the search bar and search for fbml. Then on find static fbml. Once you click on that you will see add to page on the left hand side (under the photo). Then go back to your fan page and go to edit page. Find the static page and click edit. Edit it to how you want it! Something that I found a little tricky was how to add more. What you have to do is go back to one of the Old pages you created with fbml and click add new page on the bottom. You will have to also store all your photos on an outside server (you might want to get a graphic designer & web designer involved)

4. A cool app for videos is Posted Items Pro. This will allow you to embed multiple videos from youtube, yahoo, and google videos onto your facebook page.

How To Do This: Go to your facebook fan page, click on edit page (under picture), then go to add applications and search for Posted Items Pro

5. It’s important to find a way to get people to go to your facebook fan page. Setting up a contest, survey, giveaway, etc is a good way to get people. You will need to get a big fan base so place your facebook links on your website.

Now the argument is wither facebook or twitter is better. Honestly they are both two completely different applications and I feel that they both have their own parts. Facebook will be able to give you more information then twitter, however twitter easier to get followers that aren’t part of your group of friends, family, coworkers, etc. So in the end I think they are both important!

Twitter is just one of the tools that you need to have in your social media toolbox along with things like a Facebook page, a LinkedIn profile, a blog, and an RSS feed on your website. We are living in an age of instant communication and a river of information flowing through our social networks, mobile phones, and email inboxes. Twitter is just the latest and most streamlined method for obtaining that information. So sign up and create an account, then find a few people you’d like to follow such as a celebrity or guru in your field, and follow them. Watch what they “tweet.” Some have lots to say and some have very little. Some “re-tweet” what others have said and some add links to photos, videos, or news stories. This will help you understand how you should communicate. As you follow others, you will find people following you. You don’t have to do a ton of marketing for your Twitter account. Just get started.

Don’t just talk about yourself:

Twitter is about tapping into trends and dialogue. It’s conversational and informational all at the same time, which provides a unique opportunity for marketers to build trust. If you only talk about yourself, your products, or your service, people will ultimately tune out (unless, of course, you’re a brand like Apple and your products are the trend). As you get involved with the community, you should help solve problems, address concerns, provide real information, and create value for your followers. Tell them things that they didn’t know. Make them laugh. Give them a reason to keep following you. And more importantly, give them a reason to like you and talk about you.

Don’t spam your audience:

Don’t set up an automated Twitter feed. Listening to a robot is fun for about 10 seconds. This is not what Twitter is about. Be original and engage with your followers. Additionally, don’t use Twitter as an online press room to post your company’s press releases, news updates, or new hires. Sure, it’s fine to include a couple links to a new company initiative or event…but it must be done sparingly and must be relevant to your followers. So remember to tweet wisely!

Tweet predictably:

Know ahead of time how often you plan to tweet. How often will your followers want to hear from you? Once per day? Twenty times? Make up your mind beforehand, then be predictable and stick with a consistent frequency. Don’t try to tweet “on the hour,” (you’re not a radio station), just avoid a “feast or famine” schedule. It helps to have some general topics queued up, so you’re tweeting with a consistent voice.

7 Key Principles To Effectively Use Twitter To Market Your Business

My wife and I love Twitter. We think it’s a fantastic avenue that creates new and creative ways to meet new people, and not to mention grow your business. Unfortunately; Twitter has gotten a bad rep when it comes to people misusing it. Are there any real rules to Twitter? No.

But there are some sound principles that will help you find and keep more followers if you play by them. These are just a few of many of our thoughts on this topic, so take what you will, and pass up what you won’t. It’s just our opinions, as well as many other seasoned Twitterers.

These guidelines are for newbie Twitterers, as well as other Twitterers who just want to become more effective at using Twitter to market their businesses.

1. Add your photo. Seems obvious – I know. But I can tell you across the board that Twitterers prefer to follow and chat with those who have a photo. And not just any photo…a photo of YOU! Want to connect with more people? Have more followers? Take a minute to upload a photo of your smiling face. (Be sure it can actually be seen, too. If it’s too far away, crop it and upload it again.) Keep in mind that your picture represents who you are. This will be the first thing potential new followers will see about you. What first impression do you want to give them? This is the most important question to ask yourself before deciding on what photo to upload.

2. Write a bio. Want followers then make sure you have engaging BIO. People want to know something about you before they go ahead and follow you. If you’re not comfortable sharing where you are from with the Twitterer world, then share something about who you are, what your hobbies are, etc. Have fun with this – it doesn’t need to be formal or even grammatically correct. Don’t be afraid to be daring or even outrageous. Be yourself. It’s ok to be different on Twitter…in fact you’ll get more followers if you are! Others will follow you because you’re interesting to them, or perhaps you share similar interests.

3. Add an interesting background. It’s the same concept as curb appeal. This is one more way to show your personality or style, and attract like-minded followers to you. What first impression do you want other Twitterers to have of you? Are you fun and spunky? Are you a traveler? An outdoorsman? Sports fanatic? I can tell you, there are Twitter backgrounds for every personality. A few places you can find 1000’s of backgrounds for free, or to have a custom background created. Don’t get hung up on this. Get a background set up…you can always shop around and change it later to something even more fitting!

4. Don’t vomit on people. Twitter is not just about sales. Use Twitter to meet people first. One of the most common complaints about Twitterers, from other Twitterers, is feeling like you have nothing else to say to them, other than trying to sell them. Let’s face it, people are tired of being sold all of the time. There is a reason Twitter is referred to as a social platform…to socialize! Imagine walking in to your favorite restaurant or bar, and having another patron come up to you, and then blurt out, “Hi, want to make fast cash now? Do it by buying my program now.” It just doesn’t make sense. It’s a turn off and you will get more people unfollowing you if you do this…or, another possible outcome is they will just ignore your posts since you’re that ‘annoying sales guy who is vomiting their stuff’ on them all the time. So first things first, use Twitter to meet people, gather a following. Refer them to your blog so they can get to know you. Once they’re on your blog, now it would be appropriate to direct them to your ad or sales page.

5. Use your welcome message to welcome people…not to advertise to them before they even know who you are. This is a common mistake amongst those using Twitter for business. Even those who say, “Hey Joe, thanks for following me. Like to put hundreds more in your pocket? Then click here!” This is another instant turn off. It comes across as unfriendly and self-centered. Don’t make this mistake. Thank them for following you. If you really want to connect with them, check out their profile page, then you can either ask them a question about it or give them a compliment. Don’t be fake here be genuine in your giving of kudos or showing curiosity by inquiring about something on their profile page. Start a conversation, and then you can refer them to your blog so they can get to know you better. We like to do business with people we know, like and trust, right? Help them to do this by starting a relationship first.

6. Use automated tools carefully. If you sound like a robot, for instance when you send out your automated welcome message, this too will turn people off. Be personable. Share something about yourself. And be sure that your message doesn’t exceed the 140 character limit…it’s obvious you’re using an automated response system when your followers receive a message from you that is cut off. To be sure it’s not too long, copy and paste what you intend to include in your auto-message first in Twitter as a draft. It will show you if you have too many characters, and you can cut it back if need be before saving it as an auto-message.

7. Be sure to thank people for re-tweeting your tweets…how kind of them to share your thoughts or information! When you thank them, they are more likely to want to get to know you, and may likely continue retweeting your tweets.

Are You a Twitter Quitter?

I have mixed feelings about Twitter.

I was told by many friends that I was “stuck on stupid” in the Stone Age and just had to start using Twitter.com to get into the real new world. I took a very good class on Twitter and set out to share my goings-on with the waiting world. I was told that I should strive to get as many people following me, and I, in turn, should follow them and read their 140-character impulsive thoughts because they would be reading mine.

I also read that using Twitter could help my business grow if people get to like me.

So I started “tweeting” but could not bring myself to confess to total strangers that, as a successful businessman, I had time to share that my grass is growing.

I’ve been using Twitter for awhile now, and I must confess that in reading other people’s tweets, what I’ve found is that a whole lot of people have a whole lot of time on their hands and want me to know that they are enjoying a cup of coffee somewhere or that they’re stuck in traffic (and tweeting this important information while they’re driving… hmm, I see a new traffic law coming).

It also does not seem to be two-way communication but rather a narcissistic “Look at me, and what I’m doing” one-way street. I very rarely see anyone respond or comment on others’ tweets, they just keep telling others about themselves.

I kept thinking, “Maybe I am Stone-Age stupid – I don’t get this.”

Well, this week I read a Reuters report: “Many Twitters are quick quitters.”

The article reports data that questions the long-term success of the latest social networking sensation used by celebrities from Oprah Winfrey to Britney Spears. President Obama used Twitter during last year’s campaign.

Sounds like the new wave, but data from Nielsen Online, which measures Internet traffic, found that more than 60 percent of Twitter users stopped using the free social networking site a month after joining.

“Twitter’s audience retention rate, or the percentage of a given month’s users, who come back the following month, is currently about 40 percent,” David Martin, Nielsen Online’s vice president of primary research, said. “For most of the past 12 months, pre-Oprah, Twitter has languished below 30 percent retention.”

It has enjoyed a recent explosion in popularity on the back of celebrities such as actor Ashton Kutcher and Oprah Winfrey, among countless others, who’ve sung its praises and sent out “tweets,” alerting followers to breaking news or the sender’s sometimes-mundane activities.

Twitter, as a private company, does not disclose the number of its users but according to Nielsen Online, Twitter’s website had more than 7 million unique visitors in February compared to 475,000 unique visitors in February 2008.

But Martin said a retention rate of 40 percent will limit a site’s growth to a 10 percent reach figure over the longer term.

“There simply aren’t enough new users to make up for defecting ones after a certain point,” he said. Martin said the more-established social networking sites Facebook and MySpace enjoyed retention rates that were twice as high and those rates only rose when they went through their explosive growth phases. Both currently have retention rates of about 70 percent, with Facebook having about 200 million users.

“Twitter has enjoyed a nice ride over the last few months, but it will not be able to sustain its meteoric rise without establishing a higher level of user loyalty,” said Martin.

My conclusions so far:

Starting out on Twitter is like using a spoon to carve a steak. It might work but you need more utensils to work effectively. I have discovered that there are a great many tools out there to make Twitter more effective, like Twellow, Twellowhood, Tweetstat,Twitterfriends, Twitpwr, Twtpic, TweetBeep and more. But you need the time and desire to learn how to use each of them to get the most out of Twitter.

Twitter is a fad. It’s great for celebrities, but don’t for a minute think that they are following you back. Okay, I confess that I do want to have a million adoring fans following ME, just like Oprah, hanging on my every thought to make their lives more complete and then rushing out to buy my book, “PUSHING WATER UPHILL With A Rake.”

But back in the real world I have no illusions that if I am following 5,000 people –and don’t have time to read their comings and goings – that they are all following me or caring about what I’m doing or not doing.

I think Twitter might have value if used in conjunction with other networking media. Successful Internet networking needs to be more related to personal networking and less about chatter. I have found success with smaller sub-groups on Twitter that have shared values and geography, including the Denver Twitter Connection. These types of groups are twittering within Twitter, much like groups on Facebook.

So for now, I’m not a Twitter quitter, but I’m certainly not a fan.

Why Build Relationships on Twitter?

He is by no means a Social Media Purist, but still he teaches what he considers the “right way” to interact on Twitter & other Social Media platforms (hint: it ain’t by spamming people your offers). Harris has a number of years of success in the internet marketing realm and I feel very honored to have him as a guest author today.

With that … here’s Harris’ blog post entitled “Why Build Relationships on Twitter?”: Okay, here’s the real magic of using Social Media, like Twitter, for marketing purposes…

You can build relationships with and connect to REAL PEOPLE. Oh, Big Advertising, the trade winds are a shifting. Consumers are way past the tipping point now where they tend to trust ‘Regular Joes’ now more than Big Giant Corporations.

My guess is, that if you’re reading this article, you’re probably more likely to be a Regular Joe than the CEO of a Fortune 500. (Dare I coin a new phrase? CE-Joe? Hmm, no – I’ll pass.)

So, the real glory of Twitter is not so much that you can easily build a list of followers as I discussed in my last post. It’s the fact that you can build RELATIONSHIPS with them. And this is where you, the Regular Joes, have an advantage!

What I’m going to do for you in this post is get you started creating those relationships. I’m going to give you a daily process that, if you follow it, will easily turn your Twitter account into a magnet in whatever industry or niche you may be in.

In some of my previous posts, I already got you started on the path to Twitter greatness. So, let’s recap my 4 main rules of engagement shall we?

Get Followers Build Relationships with them Get them Clicking & Retweeting and… Make Money.

In my last blog post I talked about how to get tons of followers and gave you some (hopefully) compelling reasons why you should bother. If you took action as I suggested, you will have literally thousands of new followers very soon.

So, Now what?

This brings us to the next phase of this Twitter takeover. It’s time to start to really build a relationship with your followers. But first let’s talk about why it’s so important to do so.

So here’s the question:
Who do YOU trust?

Sure, you might say your Mom or Dad, but really for most things… you trust your closest friends. What we’re talking about here is who you trust for recommendations. But to put a finer point on that and put it within the framework of a business discussion:

Who do people buy from? People (and companies) they trust!

Therefore, as you’re building your relationships on Twitter or any other social networking site, that’s actually what you’re doing… building TRUST. And it’s imperative that you do.

“How?”, you may ask. It’s not that hard really.

You’re going to want to first start by engaging your followers. This can be as easy as a simple and personal welcome message when they follow you. Some people I know actually do this manually (by hand) for each and every follower that they obtain. I can see the validity of this method – but it’s awful time-consuming. Especially considering that there are a number of services out there that can help you do this.

My personal favorite is SocialOOMPH.com . It’s free and easy to use. Not only does it send out automatic welcome messages for you, it also allows you to schedule tweets to go out in the future among many other very powerful features. Go check it out Social OOMPH, it’s an incredible free tool.

You’ll want to be sure to create a welcome message that adds value or engages your new follower. Otherwise, you’re just creating spam straight to their direct message inbox. Stay away from even attempting to tell your new follower about any product or service that you might have. It’s a sure way to turn them off and have them unfollow you immediately.

What you want to do is get them replying back to you right away. For instance, ask a question that’s easy for them to answer – their favorite gadget, football team, or whatever’s appropriate to your interests.

There is some debate about automatic welcome messages and I’ve had several discussions (some heated) with people on Twitter about it. The bottom line is this: You must give value and further your cause in some way. It’s a delicate balance. You can’t just say “Hey look what I got, don’t you wanna buy one”. And be warned, “Hey thanks for the follow, looking forward to tweeting with you” ends up being just as useless to you in the long run as well.

Finally, what I really wanted to do was give you a quick “daily process” that you can follow to really ensure interaction on Twitter. Feel free to add in more than this if you want to, but if you do this each and every day, you can be certain you’ll have a growing base of people you’re starting to build a relationship with.

Daily Process For Your Twitter Account

Read your @mentions and reply to all of them. Post what you’re actually doing or thinking about right now. Post a favorite quotation, recent news link, or just basic info (this can be from online or offline resources) HINT: Go to alerts.google.com and set up some alerts for your interests to be automatically sent to your inbox. Scan your own timeline & look for conversations to jump into. Go to http://search.twitter.com , search for topics of interest to you, and get into a few conversations there as well. While you’re there, go ahead and search for your own name and/or company name to see if anyone is talking about you Check your direct messages (DMs) and reply to them as well. Repeat this at at least 3 times a day.

In a future blog post, I’ll share with you some awesome secrets about how to get your Twitter friends to click on stuff you send out, and even more importantly how to get them ReTweeting like crazy as well.

Six Essential Social Media Tools For Business Success

1. Your Own Blog

RSS feeds are the proverbial backbone of the Social Web. You can only benefit from the exposure in the many RSS feed directories on the Web if you have your own RSS feed to publish on it. The easiest way to have your own RSS feed is to start a blog.

But merely starting a blog is far from enough. Your blog needs to be optimized and your blog post content must be kept fresh, engaging, and integrated into your other social media tools.

Free and nearly free blogs can be started using tools available through WordPress.com, Blogger, or Typepad. You can also install a blog on your existing site with tools at WordPress.org.

2. Get Your Facebook On

A Facebook presence can consist of both a Facebook profile and a Facebook page. They are different things and it is very important to know which is which.

Facebook profiles are for individuals, not a business. A business can create a profile for a key representative of the business, but not for the business itself.

Always take time to optimize your Facebook profile by completing it as thoroughly as possible with content that contains key terms that are relevant to the individual as a representative of your business. Be sure to import your blog and all your other social tools into your Facebook feed.

The Facebook page is for your business. A page can be created for a service or product business, a local business, or for an actor/artist/musician/writer, you name it.

Your Facebook page is like all first impressions: you want it to represent your business effectively. Below is a list of a few Facebook applications to add to your page that can help make your impression a great one:

Social RSS is an app that imports RSS feeds or blog entries
MyFlickr imports photos and images from your Flickr account
YouTube Box helps you add your video clips to your Facebook page
ShopTab is a great app for selling your products, but it has a modest monthly fee
Static FBML gets HTML code onto your page
Causes enables donation acceptance for your nonprofit business

3. Professionals Get a LinkedIn Account

While Facebook is for social networking, LinkedIn is designed as more of a professional networking site. It is, therefore, an essential tool for business – especially for those businesses that do B2B.

Since your LinkedIn profile may be the first impression someone gets of your business, you need to take time to optimize it. Fill in every profile section using your edited content and best key terms.

It is a good practice to add applications that enhance your profile. A must-have is the BlogLink application for importing your blog entries. Another good tactic is to join LinkedIn groups that are relevant to your business.

4. The Twitter Account

Small but powerful, Twitter is a micro-blogging tool that allows short entries of only 140 characters. Limited though it may be, it is a social networking tool that lets users interact with posts in “real-time.” It is an incredibly effective way to spread the word about events, products, and services, but you want to use it in addition to your regular blog, not as a substitute for it.

Tools like TweetDeck or HootSuite help keep your “tweets” fresh and plentiful. These tools let you post-date your tweets so you do not have to be in constant tweet mode. You can add several at one sitting and let the app post them at designated times. HootSuite also has an option for importing your blog posts as tweets.

Managing all of the people you are following can be problematic, but use Twitter lists to help minimize that issue.

5. A Flickr Account

The Flickr media community makes uploading and sharing your photos and other images very easy. It is a highly underrated social media tool. It is surprising to people how you can get such great exposure and enhanced search engine placement when you use Flickr wisely.

Per usual, the secret to good placement is consistent use of key terms in names, tags, and descriptions. When you add images to Flickr, rename your uploaded files so they include a few key terms that are relevant to the image and to your business. Be sure to include those same key terms for your tags and the image description.

Again, don’t forget to integrate your Flickr account with all your other social tools and be sure to add them as galleries to your Website or blog.

6. A YouTube Account

The power of viral video is undeniable. If your business makes use of video in any fashion, you have to get those videos on YouTube. Even if you don’t have videos of a product or a meeting or as a training tool, you can create a playlist of videos already on YouTube and reap the benefits of their popularity. Commenting on other videos can also glean benefits for your business.

And whether you have your own videos or have created playlists, you definitely want to import them into your other social sites or use them to embed a video gallery onto your blog or Website.

As in Flickr and any other image tool, you need to use your best key terms in file names, tags, and descriptions of the clips you add to these media communities.

Twitter is all the rage this year. It is becoming more unlikely that you have not at least heard someone mention it in passing. It seems as though that everyone is getting on twitter these days. People like Oprah, and Ashton Kutcher have amassed huge followings recently. And so many are finding twitter as a very valuable tool for business.

If you use Twitter on the web by itself there’s already a lot of things that you can do to promote your business. However there are several other ways that you can enhance your Twitter experience. In this article, you are going to discover 3 ways that you can enhance your Twitter experience.

First; Use Twitter in combination with other networking sites

This is absolutely critical. That’s why it is listed first. You should never put all your eggs in one basket so to speak. You always want to have a veriety of ways to stay connected, in case something were to happen to twitter. Such as; What if it’s down for maintenance? What if there are just too many tweeps on at once and you keep seeing the fail whale (that’s what happens when you can’t load twiter)? There is a service called tweetake, which allows you to download your followers, favorites, tweets, dms, everything you need to talk to your Twitter family outside of Twitter. I suggest you download this file from tweetake daily. Another thing you should do is invite your friends to join you on Facebook, LinkedIn or an awesome site that will keep you very connected is Friendfeed.com. It has over 50 services that you can link and keep up with all in one place. I also recommend putting your Facebook profile on your Twitter page as your website. That way when people follow you on Twitter, they’ll go right to your Facebook page and follow you there too. Find an email address for your Twitter posse so you can send emails to them. Don’t send them commercial messages unless they sign up for your email list. That’s considered spam, so don’t be a spammer. You can send them messages that you’d send to your friends. It’s great to email your Twitter friends information that will help them with their business. They’ll be extremely grateful to you for sending them wonderful information and it will seem more personal because you sent it right to them instead of blasting it to the whole Twitterverse! Your goal is to build what I am calling valuable Twitterships, I don’t know if anyone else has coined that one. It’s just ralationships on twitter

Second; Use Twitter +twitwall to market your telecalls.

Twitwall is an excellent service to use to market your telecalls. Every Twitter user gets a twitwall. You’d use your twitwall when you have things that are more than 140 characters to post. You can use your twitwall to promote your telecalls very easily. You’d just post the relevant information to the twitwall and then retweet it. Important: Be sure to include the words please retweet in the headline when you post information about your telecall. Even though twitwall makes it easy for people to retweet your information, they won’t do it unless you tell them to most of the time.

Third; Twitter + Hashtag + Tweetchat = PARTY!

Another great way to get people talking about you and your business is to hold a Twitter party! Twitter parties are very easy to set up. All you have to do is create a hashtag for your party. Basically a hashtag acts a tracker for your party. Once you decide on a hashtag, next pick a date and a time. Then start telling everyone that’s in your Twitter family about your party and ask them to retweet the information for you. On the day of the party you can use tweetchat to follow everything everyone is saying about the party. Tweetchat is awesome because once you go to the website and log in, it automatically inserts the hashtag and tells you how many characters you have left to tweet with. It also allows you to momentarily stop the chat within the chat room so you can scroll back and see what was said before you enter the room. It’s important to both participate in and throw Twitter parties because it’s a great way to get the word out about your business and you can meet new people that are interested in the same things that you are interested in.

Twitter is a great tool to use to drive traffic to your website. These things that I’ve mentioned will only improve the amount and quality of the traffic you get to your website.
